For fans invested in the lore of Dead by Daylight, the Yamaoka family name will be familiar - a name with an ancient ancestry drenched in blood. This is the name belonging to two Killers of Japanese legend in Dead by Daylight; Rin Yamaoka, The Spirit, and Kazan Yamaoka, The Oni. Though separated by the ages, both are driven by an unrivaled bloodlust and thirst for vengeance that strikes fear in the heart of their prey. For the Oni, his Yamaoka’s Wrath can be difficult to control yet extremely powerful, especially when paired with the right perks.

This guide will showcase the most optimal Dead by Daylight builds to use with The Oni, using both teachable and non-teachable perks, in order to make the most of his power.

Dead by Daylight: Best Builds for The Oni

As the Stranger Things DLC Chapter returns to Dead by Daylight , its once general perks now return to the characters they were released with. This new and improved guide removes The Demogorgon's teachable perks from the beginner build; it also features a new list of the best Add-Ons to use on The Oni.

The Oni: Best Non-Teachable Build (2023)

A dangerous yet well-balanced Killer, the experienced Oni is an expert at maintaining pressure on Survivors by keeping them injured and using his power to snowball, achieving multiple downs with one use. This build is designed to follow these principles by keeping Survivors injured and preventing them from using their Exhaustion perks.

  • Blood Echo (The Oni) – After hooking a Survivor, all injured Survivors suffer from Hemorrhage and Exhausted for 45 seconds. This perk has a 60 second cooldown
  • Sloppy Butcher (General Perk) – Basic attacks cause the Mangled and Hemorrhage status ailments for 90 seconds, slowing down healing by 25% and regressing healing progress when left unfinished.
  • Bitter Murmur (General Perk) – Each time a generator is completed, the auras of Survivors within 16 meters of that generator are revealed for 5 seconds. Once the last generator is complete, all Survivors’ auras are revealed for 10 seconds.
  • Hex: No One Escapes Death (General Perk) – After the final generator is completed, all Survivors suffer from the Exposed status ailment and you gain a 4% Haste effect until the Hex Totem is cleansed.

The Oni: Best Build (2023)

This build focuses on using some of the most powerful perks in Dead by Daylight to slow the game down tremendously with a variety of regression perks while still gaining information on distant Survivors.

  • Scourge Hook: Pain Resonance (The Artist) – The Killer starts with four tokens. For each different Survivor hooked on a white Scourge Hook, lose one token and explode the generator with the most progress, causing it to lose 25% of progress.
  • Corrupt Intervention (The Plague) – At the start of the trial, the three generators furthest from the killer's starting location are blocked for 120 seconds or until the first survivor is downed.
  • Barbecue & Chili (The Cannibal) – After hooking a Survivor, this perk will reveal the aura of all other Survivors’ further than 40 meters from the hook for 5 seconds.
  • No Way Out (The Trickster) – At the end of the trial when a survivor interacts with an exit gate, users will receive a noise notification, and the exit gates will be blocked for 12 seconds, plus another 12 seconds for each new survivor hooked.

The Oni: Best Add-Ons

Cracked Sakazuki

While The Oni’s Common Add-Ons aren’t particularly impactful, the Cracked Sakazuki is maybe the best among them. This Add-On decreases Blood Fury activation and cooldown time by half a second each, enabling a slightly faster style of play.

Chipped Saihai

The best Uncommon Add-On, the Chipped Saihai increases the duration of The Oni’s power by 6 seconds, granting more time to achieve instant downs while in Blood Fury.

Yamaoka Sashimono

Like the Chipped Saihai, the Yamaoka Sashimono increases Blood Fury duration by an extra 8 seconds.

Kanai-Anzen Talisman

For players who prefer speed to duration, the Kanai-Anzen Talisman increases Blood Fury movement speed by 8%. This Oni Add-On is particularly effective for those who have already mastered one of Dead by Daylight's stronger Killers and want to get more out of their power.

Splintered Hull

The Oni has some spectacular Very Rare Add-Ons, but chief among them is the Splintered Hull. This power modifier increases the frequency of Blood Orbs dropped by Survivors by 33%, essentially allowing The Oni to enter power far more often and instantly down Survivors.

Lion Fang

The Oni’s best duration Add-On, the Lion Fang simply increases Blood Fury duration by 10 seconds.

Akito’s Crutch

Similar to the Kanai-Anzen Talisman, Akito’s Crutch increases Demon Dash movement speed. The 13% increased speed will certainly catch even the most experienced Survivors off-guard.

Iridescent Family Crest

Though not as impressive as his Very Rare Add-Ons, the Iridescent Family Crest is a useful little Ultra Rare Add-On that can help weed out stealthy Survivors. During Blood Fury, attacking the ground will cause all Survivors within 24 meters to scream and reveal their location for 4 seconds. Importantly, this Add-On requires no Survivor input and cannot be countered by Jeff Johansen's Distortion.
