Highlights

  • Days Gone getting a sequel is highly unlikely, despite the potential the IP had. A prequel within the established world could be explored if given the opportunity.
  • Possible titles for a sequel could be Days Gone 2 or Days Gone Origins, while a prequel could be called 0 Days Gone or 2 Days Gone, depending on the timeline.
  • A prequel showcasing Deacon's life in the MC before the apocalypse, along with the outbreak's beginning, would be intriguing. However, a revival of the game may not be likely due to the reported failure of the IP and Bend's focus on a new PS5 IP.

Days Gone getting a sequel at this point is highly unlikely, which is unfortunate due to how much potential the IP had at Bend. Sam Witwer’s Deacon St. John was a great protagonist, for example, and his background as an enforcer in the Mongrels MC gave the game a rich history to dig into amid all the apocalyptic shenanigans Days Gone got into. There’s certainly room in the IP for Days Gone to explore a prequel within the world it’s already needed to establish, leaving Bend with an interesting choice to make down the road if it ever gets the opportunity.

Days Gone’s nearly impossible sequel or prequel could go the route of simply being called Days Gone 2 or throwing on a common subtitle like Days Gone Origins. It being a proper sequel taking place after the events of the original game would probably make leaning toward a Days Gone 2 or subtitle more natural anyhow, with its subtitle being anything relative to what the sequel’s narrative contextualizes. If Days Gone had a prequel, though, there are at least two predictable titles that Days Gone could take on to represent that it is indeed a prequel in name alone.

Days Gone’s Prequel Could Be ‘0 Days Gone’, ‘2 Days Gone’, and So Forth

0 Days Gone would be a cheeky title with a number that represents it takes place before the first installment, similar to what Resident Evil 0 did, while literally explaining that the game takes place on the day that Deacon and Sarah were separated. Days Gone didn’t take place over a single day and a prequel wouldn’t have to, either, but it would be great to see a lot more of Deacon’s life in the MC before the apocalypse began, leading directly into how he and Boomer began meeting different settlement groups and how they responded to all the mayhem going on around them.

It would be exciting to see how the MC is split up as well, and getting to see how Deacon’s life functioned while actively in the MC would be even greater for his character development. Of course, a Days Gone prequel might not even feature Deacon or the Mongrels at all, instead choosing to feature new protagonists and how they might’ve reacted to the chaotic ongoings of the Freaker outbreak, though it’s arguable that the angle of having a protagonist from a motorcycle club made it more unique.

This emphasis led to Days Gone’s engaging vehicle management for the motorcycle when riding around the open world and fast-traveling to different landmarks, a feature that stood out even amid the horde floods in the latter half. There might not be any point in having a prequel set close to when Days Gone takes place due to how similar the world would be, and thus starting it right around the outbreak’s beginning and keeping it there would be the most intriguing course of action. In this case, the title 2 Days Gone would be equally cheeky and work well also as a prequel title that can even include the number two in it for sequel purposes.

Essentially any number would suffice, but depending on how many days are featured in the title it would represent a point on the Days Gone timeline and either position it as a prequel or a sequel. The chances of a prequel or a sequel still don’t look terrific since Bend has moved on to develop a new PS5 IP and Days Gone itself was reportedly unsuccessful for a number of reasons, but it would be a shame if this post-apocalyptic action-adventure game didn’t have some sort of revival in the future.
