Despite some rather stout competition, Days Gone had a very good first week of sales on Steam. In fact, the PC port of the former PS4 exclusive managed to top the sales list for Steam this past week, beating out one of the most anticipated games of the spring in Mass Effect: Legendary Edition.

Days Gone has certainly built up a cult following over the last few years, despite originally being considered a "middling" game by critics. In recent months, the game's fanbase has been quite vocal about the fact it wants a Days Gone 2, despite talk that Sony has no plans for a sequel. It appears that players having to settle for a new version of the game was enough to drive sales numbers to the top spot of all games on offer through Steam.

Industry analyst Daniel Ahmad announced the latest rankings on his Twitter account on Sunday. Despite talk about a few issues with the port, and knowledge that this version of Days Gone doesn't have features high-end PC games usually have, the analyst said the game has had a steady performance. Those features, usually highlighted when marketing a game, mean that the port of Sony's first-party title doesn't have ray-tracing or DLSS support. Gamers were willing to overlook those facts, as they bought enough copies that it knocked Mass Effect: Legendary Edition off the perch it had attained a week earlier.

Mass Effect: Legendary Edition is a remaster of the original trilogy, though it's more than just an up-rezzing of the original graphics. BioWare said it had also changed some of the combat features in order to bring the style more in line with what users are more used to on the current consoles. Already having a cult following of its own, there was quite a bit of excitement in the trilogy's community about getting to see the games on the new platforms. The excitement was apparently enough to have it finish right near the top of Steam sales in its first two weeks.

Losing out to Days Gone for the top spot on the listing isn't a huge surprise given that brand new titles tend to do brisk sales, especially when they're AAA titles. For all intents and purposes, Days Gone is a brand new PC game, since it had never been on the platform before. Gamers who didn't own a Sony console are getting to play the motor-cycle-based zombie game for the first time.

There was one other new addition to the Top 5 best-selling games on Steam in the past week. Despite, or perhaps because of reported performance issues in the PS4 version of Biomutant, preorders for the PC version of the game finished third on Steam's list. THQ Nordic's latest project releases later this week.

Days Gone is available now on PS4 and PC.
