If there's one thing gamers don't ever seem to get tired of, it's shooting zombies. Days Gone released today and is the latest title to pit players against zombie-like creatures. This action-adventure survival game takes place in--you guessed it--a post-apocalyptic open world swarming with "Freakers". An open world means there will be a lot of land to cover. To prepare players for the journey through Freaker-infested territories, a full in-game map was recently posted that provides some clarity on the size of the world they will be diving into.

Even at a glance, it is easy to see how large the map is. However, zooming in really puts its size in perspective. The Days Gone map is divided into six regions: Cascade, Belknap, Lost Lake, Iron Butte, Crater Lake, and Highway 97. At the beginning of the game, much of the map will be covered in fog. This fog can be lifted by conquering Ambush Camps or simply passing through the area, but unveiling everything will be much quicker by clearing camps.

It should be noted, however, that overly ambitious new players cannot explore the entire map from the start. They will need to progress through the story to unlock new areas. Once a new portion is unlocked, players can check out all of the sights - and horrors - that corner of the map provides.

A big, fat map to explore is certainly a plus, but the gameplay and story are immensely important elements as well. Given its genre and style, there was always a chance Days Gone could be overshadowed by predecessors doing much of the same, but despite this hurdle, the game is reviewing well. We recently gave it our stamp of approval, awarding it a very nice score. For more insight into how we arrived at this decision, as well as what to expect from the game, be sure to peruse our full Days Gone review.

The title has only recently released, but that isn't stopping Sony and Bend Studio from delving into post-launch content to prepare audiences for what's next. The first portion of DLC involves kicking up the difficulty for the more masochistic players out there with a new "Survival" mode. This mode will push players even further than the "Hard" difficulty already available, removing fast travel, Survival vision, as well as maps and indicators. No word yet on an exact date of release.

The next set of DLC includes a new Bike, Horde, or Combat challenge being added to the game at the beginning of each week in June. Each challenge will take the basic gameplay features from the game and tweak them in interesting ways. As players would hope, completing the challenges will reward everything from trophies to items, such as unique bike skins. The best part is that this post-launch Days Gone DLC is free. Both the new difficulty and various challenges in June will be available to players for nada.

Days Gone is available now exclusively on the PlayStation 4.
