A petition for a sequel to Days Gone, Sony’s post-apocalyptic open-world zombie title, is nearing a new milestone of signatures, highlighting the craving fans have for a follow-up to the original title. Since the announcement of Days Gone at E3 2016, and its subsequent release in April 2019, the title has received a cult following of players who’ve enjoyed the game for its technical fidelity and Sam Witwer’s performance as protagonist Deacon St. John.
Days Gone is set in a post-apocalyptic Oregon, where a virus has overtaken the globe and has transformed portions of humanity into zombie-like creatures called “Freakers." Players control Deacon St. John, a former outlaw-turned-drifter, he searches for his wife, whom he previously thought was dead. Toward the end of the game, Deacon learns that the organization that let the original virus loose is coming for him and his new friends, teasing a potential sequel.
Although a sequel to Days Gone has not been green-lit yet, fans still yearn for Sony and Bend Studio, the developer behind the game as well as the Syphon Filter series, to produce another title in this potential series. A petition on Change.org was launched last year for Sony to approve the project, and as of now is starting to reach a milestone of 150,000 signatures.
According to several outlets, it was reported that Bend Studio pitched an idea for a sequel to Sony, which was promptly denied due to the poor reception the game initially received upon launch. Alongside this news, co-director John Garvin controversially pleaded to players to “buy the game a full price," implying that another reason the sequel was shelved was due to the game not turning a profit for Sony and suffered from poor sales compared to other titles releasing at the time.
With the newfound success that Days Gone has been receiving since the release of its PC port, the idea of revisiting Days Gone for a sequel should not be out of the question. It's possible that Garvin and co-director Jeff Ross have more story to tell in this universe, and Sam Witwer has not kept secret that he wishes to return to role of Deacon.
It will be fascinating to see whether Sony will eventually give the directors the chance to tell the rest of their story and give fans more time to spend with Deacon and his friends and their fight against the Freakers.
Days Gone is now available for PC and PS4.
