Canadian director David Cronenberg is set to return to the big screen very soon with his new flick Crimes of the Future. Every detail of this film has been intriguing fans across the world, and now there’s a new piece to the puzzle.
Previews of the film so far show Cronenberg doing what he does best: some very weird and potentially thought-provoking body horror. Combine that with a very high-profile cast, and people are interested. Especially those horror fans craving something a little gross.
Multiple trailers and images from the film have been released so far, painting a pretty detailed narrative of what Crimes of the Future will focus on. With that being said, it also seems like a film that will surprise its audience. Cronenberg himself has said that he wouldn’t be surprised if audiences walked out of his film in the first five minutes due to its disturbing nature. However, he seems to be wearing this as a badge of honor. Now, a strange poster has been released that may make theatergoers a little uneasy, showing a seemingly open Viggo Mortensen with tentacles coming out of his abdomen. The amount of red and fleshy texture is surely reminiscent of the inside of a body. Though it may seem shocking, this kind of artwork is completely what is to be expected given the released plot of the movie.
Crimes of the Future is not at all related to Cronenberg's previous film of the same name. It stars Mortensen, Lea Seydoux, and Twilight alum Kristen Stewart. Mortensen plays a performance artist who, along with his partner (Seydoux), showcases the strange metamorphosis of his body for all to see. Stewart's character tracks their movements with the National Organ Registry, and a secret group with activist intentions is revealed.
This type of film and the images that have been seen so far seem to be quintessential Cronenberg. Known for controversial body horror with social messages like The Fly, eXistenZ, and Videodrome, Crimes of the Future will undoubtedly fit right in with his filmography. In an era where body horror is lacking compared to more subtle aspects of the genre, fans of all things gruesome are getting excited.
Previously, the director has called his newest picture "a meditation on human evolution." He also leaves a suggestion to longtime fans, stating that Crimes of the Future is also representative of the evolution of his own work and that there will be references and Easter eggs related to his previous films.
Crimes of the Future is being released to U.S. theaters on June 3, 2022.
