How to Get Old Dog Trophy in The Dark Pictures: House of Ashes
The beginning steps toward earning this achievement come in the game’s prologue, and the very first one is to make sure that Balathu hits the fleeing girl with his spear. Then, later in the prologue, horror video game fans should opt to stay and “Fight” and make sure that they hit every QTE in the moments that follow. These actions will allow Balathu to remain alive and be able to get another fatality with his spear.
With respect to that second fatality, there are two opportunities for it to occur. The first one comes during “The Assault,” where players should choose for Rachel to “Save” Eric from being killed. Balathu will then appear after Rachel has used the UV wand in House of Ashes to thwart the creatures’ advances, and fans should simply fail the associated QTE to get struck by the spear.
If a player prefers to save Rachel in House of Ashes, then they can instead let Salim fall to the spear near the end of the game. To do this, fans should select “Retreat” when Nick is setting the explosives in “Strange Aeons” and then choose “Forceful” to go rescue Salim. These decisions will eventually lead to a situation where Balathu chucks his spear, and players should again fail the QTE to let it hit.
Regardless of the character that players choose to sacrifice to Balathu, the Old Dog achievement will unlock as soon as the second spear lands. Notably, players will also earn House of Ashes’ The Sword And The Shield trophy while working through these steps, as that one is granted for choosing to stay in fight during the prologue. Those two achievements are certainly not the only ones that the game has to offer, though, and fans that are going for 100% completion will need to earn many more.
