Highlights

  • Daredevil: Born Again is facing production challenges, but the inclusion of the villain Muse could add intrigue to the series.
  • Muse is a graphic and violent villain who uses his victims as artwork. His presence would highlight the darker tone of the series.
  • Other confirmed returning characters include Kingpin, Bullseye, and Frank Castle, which could make for an interesting dynamic.

There were a lot of ups and downs after Daredevil's third season concluded in 2018. News quickly broke that all of the Netflix shows were receiving cancellations, leaving many fans distraught because of how different those shows were compared to everything happening on the big screen. Then there was a bit of a reprieve when Charlie Cox reprised his role as Matt Murdock in Spider-Man: No Way Home, shining some light on the possibility of a Daredevil revival. Ultimately, that revival came with Daredevil: Born Again and a small role in the Disney+ She-Hulk: Attorney at Law series.

However, even the production of Daredevil: Born Again has been a rollercoaster of emotions because the cast and crew had to go back to the drawing board after reviewing a finished product that didn't meet quality standards. While that might have been a disappointment to some, it might have led to the inclusion of one Daredevil comic book villain who is sure to deliver an intriguing direction for the series. If the rumors about Muse are true, this would mark his live-action debut and truly solidify an R-rating for the Disney+ series.

Change is scary, but that doesn't mean fans need to fear the changes to the MCU's Daredevil: Born Again.

Who is Muse?

Daredevil's Muse

If Daredevil: Born Again is truly going to be the official fourth season of the titular character's Netflix series, which contrasts in tone with the rest of the MCU, Muse is a good villain to highlight that. He isn't a supervillain commonly seen in wider MCU projects due to his graphic and violent nature. Muse is an artist by trade who moonlights as a serial killer and uses his victims as his canvas. His comic book debut garnered Daredevil's attention due to a piece of "artwork" that used the blood of over 100 different people.

Muse's true identity is unknown, but he possesses superhuman strength and speed as well as the ability to confuse Daredevil's heightened senses, making it difficult for the Man Without Fear to track him. While he primarily goaded Daredevil and his sidekick Blindspot in the comics, even taking the sidekick's eyes at one point, he also gained the attention of the Inhumans after using Inhuman remains for one of his displays. They helped the Man Without Fear find and capture the serial killer and restrained him in a high-security detention facility in New Attilan. Unfortunately, it wasn't good enough to hold Muse, as he killed a dozen guards and escaped.

The reason for his escape? New York City tightened its regulations against vigilantes, including Daredevil, and the villain felt inspired by Daredevil's perseverance. Blindspot and Muse had a final showdown after the villain returned to New York, which resulted in Muse allowing a fire to consume him because he couldn't defeat Blindspot.

Why Fans Expect Muse to Be in Daredevil: Born Again

Daredevil Yellow Costume

Thanks to residents of New York City, fans get to see some interesting behind-the-scenes photographs of sets used throughout the city. One of these images, thanks to the user WingFinn48 on X (formerly Twitter), shows some graffiti of Kingpin on a wall. It's a brilliant piece of art that displays the two sides of Wilson Fisk. One half shows him clad in white with the city of New York juxtaposed with his suit, while the other half wears black with flames rising from beneath. The key piece of evidence is the artist's signature.

While the studio hasn't confirmed the character's involvement in the series yet, the credited artist is Muse, as seen at the bottom right of the artwork. While this could be a simple reference to a villain that's not going to appear in the series, it's weird to reference such a brutal character and not do anything with them. It also begs the question: Was the painting made from the blood of Muse's victims?

Will Muse be the Only Villain in Daredevil: Born Again?

Details to Daredevil: Born Again are scarce, but it's clear that Kingpin will be center stage for the series. Thanks to the mid-credit scene of Echo's finale, it's quite clear that Kingpin will be making a bid for mayor of New York City, which is straight out of the comics. Additionally, those regulations against vigilantes growing more oppressive were thanks to Fisk as mayor. Further evidence that coincides with Muse debuting in the MCU.

Other characters confirmed to return are Bullseye and Frank Castle. Punisher and Daredevil might have parted ways on good terms after Daredevil's second season, but they still don't see eye-to-eye on each other's methods. If Frank returns to New York, there could be some rivalry between the two vigilantes. After season three of Netflix's Daredevil, Bullseye has some unfinished business with the Devil of Hell's Kitchen. The disgraced FBI agent ended season three with a broken spine, but a mid-credit scene hinted at a possible recovery that looks to be further explained in the upcoming Disney+ series.

If Muse makes it into the new series, it could potentially muddle the waters with too many villains. However, there are a number of ways that writers and showrunner could make it work. The most obvious would be dropping hints of Muse throughout the season, with his reveal only coming in a mid-credits scene during the finale to set up a second season for the new Daredevil series.
