At a glance, Danganronpa might seem like nothing more than a hyper-stylized visual novel full to the brim with a ton of weird minigames. However, the reality couldn't be further away from the truth — the series features a ton of amazing murder mysteries that are absolutely incredible to unravel and decipher. It helps that the characters in this series have consistently proven to be extremely memorable and engaging in their own right as well.
One such character who has been a fan-favorite since his debut is Nagito Komaeda. Danganronpa's Ultimate Lucky Student is one of the more twisted characters in the entire franchise, with his motives and ideals being a mystery all the way to his untimely end. 7 He Had To Deal With Several Illnesses
Nagito is not really a healthy child, which is rather ironic given the fact that he's the Ultimate Lucky Student. It seems that luck is on his side in the most eccentric ways — a twisted notion that compliments Nagito's strange character.
In his free-time events, it's revealed that he was diagnosed with both frontotemporal lobe dementia and stage 3 malignant lymphoma, which are two serious diseases for anyone to deal with, let alone a high school student. The fact that he was almost going to die from the Despair Disease is indicative of just how dangerous his situation really was.
6 His Romantic Preferences Might Not Be Set In Stone
For the most part, Nagito's sexuality is almost never a point of discussion in Danganronpa, since it isn't really relevant to the plot. However, free-time events and additional information surrounding his character have shed some light on his romantic preferences.
There are several times when Nagito outright declares his love for Hajime in the series. Notable instances of these include a free-time event and the Danganronpa Another Story (Crimson Version) drama CD. Along with this, he also flirts with Hajime multiple times during the game's Island Mode.
5 His Death Is A Combination Of All Scenes In The First Game
One of the best and most shocking cases in Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair was the death of Nagito. Figuring out the mystery behind this death and Nagito's twisted plan makes for one of the most memorable and enjoyable moments in this title by a country mile.
What most people might've missed out on is the fact that his death is actually a combination of all the murders from the first game. He was tied up like Chihiro, stabbed like Sayaka, speared like Mukuro, and ultimately poisoned like Sakura.
4 Nagito Komaeda Is An Anagram Of "I'm Makoto Naegi" In Japanese
Given the mysterious nature of Danganronpa, it's only a given that certain secrets would be hidden in places that most people won't expect at all. One such mystery was present in Nagito's name itself, which served as an anagram of Makoto Naegi in Japanese.
Most people speculated for the longest time that both characters were one and the same. However, this wasn't the case, and the developers mainly used this small secret to build intrigue towards the second game.
3 His Japanese Voice Actress Is The Same Person Who Voiced Makoto Naegi As Well
The relation between Nagito Komaeda and Makoto Naegi doesn't stop with just their names. Even the voice actors of both characters are the same in the Japanese dub! It's easy to see why so many people were speculating about these connections long before the game's release.
Megumi Ogata's voice perfectly compliments both characters in the Japanese dub. However, this wasn't indicative of anything bigger and can be chalked up to nothing more than a coincidental casting choice.
2 He's Scared Of Flying
A fact about Nagito that most people might not be aware of is that he's actually afraid of flying. It's one of his biggest fears; the idea of being trapped in a plane and accepting his death is one of the most terrifying experiences he can subject himself to.
This fear is revealed when players interact with him in Island Mode. There's a shot of Nagito in a plane during the Danganronpa 3 anime, following which the airplane crashed as well! It's easy to see why he's terrified of flying.
1 There's An Easter Egg About Him In AI: The Somnium Files
AI: The Somnium Files is a highly underrated mystery title that fans of Danganronpa need to check out. The game is available on Xbox Game Pass as well, and players who love the vibe of Danganronpa will feel right at home with AI: The Somnium Files.
There's a guardian dog statue that players can interact with at one point in The Somnium Files. Interacting with it once again will bring up a dialogue stating that the dog reminds the player of Nagito, who was referred to as the Ultimate Lucky Student!
