Cyberpunk 2077 is on track to receive a significant visual overhaul thanks to one of the Witcher 3's most successful modders. The creator of The Witcher 3 HD Reworked mod has announced that they're working on a Cyberpunk 2077 HD Reworked mod that aims to update the game's lower-quality textures while keeping CD Projekt RED's original vision intact.

CD Projekt RED's open-world RPGs have long been home to a passionate community of modders, with thousands of mods having been created over the years for the various titles in the Witcher series and, most recently, Cyberpunk 2077. Massive open-world games are rife with opportunities for modders who may wish to add new weapons or characters, scripted events, new abilities, or touch up on the game's mechanics in new ways, while others focus more on the visual side of things. These larger games tend to have more than a few bugs, leading to other mods which function as unofficial community patches.

Out of over 5,500 available mods on The Witcher 3's Nexus Mods page, the most popular by far is The Witcher 3 HD Reworked Project which boasts an impressive 5.3 million downloads. This comprehensive 9 GB user-made graphics update enhances countless textures throughout the game, mostly targeting the lower-detail textures that weren't a high visual priority for the game's developers. Comparison shots really drive home what a massive improvement the new textures make. Thankfully for Cyberpunk 2077 fans, Halk Hogan, the creator of The Witcher 3 HD Reworked Project, has announced that they're giving CD Projekt RED's cyberpunk RPG a similar touchup.

Early progress on the Cyberpunk 2077 mod is shown in the announcement trailer, mostly featuring improvements to various environmental textures. Low-resolution pavement textures are already much improved, with increased detail particularly noticeable around the bumps and cracks in the roads. Graffiti throughout Night City has also seen an upgrade, with much sharper detail that makes the street art far more readable. Rock and dirt textures have stronger contrast in their shadows, and many of the improved textures work beautifully with the game's lighting to create an overall far more immersive setting.

Cyberpunk 2077 is a massive game, so Halk Hogan has their work cut out for them when it comes to improving the game's visuals. An announcement of the release date for the mod can be expected soon. Meanwhile, they are also working on an HD Reworked Project for The Witcher 3's next-gen version.

Cyberpunk 2077 is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
