CD Projekt RED reveals that Cyberpunk 2077 uses a different game engine to The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt reviews said that the game looked amazing, but to make Nigh City look incredible too, the developer had to change the technology it used to create Cyberpunk 2077.

Speaking to MCV UK, Cyberpunk 2077 producer Richard Borzymowski said that the developer wouldn't be able to make Cyberpunk 2077 using the same engine as The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. Borzymowski said that the new game engine allowed the developers to make Cyberpunk 2077 first-person game, which also allowed the developers to create "the verticality of the various buildings and skyscrapers around the place." CD Projekt RED has said that Cyberpunk 2077's skyscrapers may offer several missions for players to enjoy and so it wouldn't be able to offer that without the new engine.

Cyberpunk 2077 to have love

Borzymowski also revealed that the new game engine allowed the team to add "global illumination" to Cyberpunk 2077. The game will have a day/night cycle, but that doesn't just mean changing the color of the game's sky. There are two versions of Night City, and these are the daytime version and the version of the city at night. "You have the shader of the water dripping off, but this wouldn’t give you as big an impression as having global illumination as well," said Borzymowski.

CD Projekt RED has confirmed that Cyberpunk 2077 will be smaller than The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and its story may be shorter. However, it also seems like the game will offer more things to do within the smaller space and there could also be many smaller things for players to see and do. This may be the way that the water looks when the light hits it at night, or the looks on NPC's faces when the player character is talking to them. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt may look good, but Cyberpunk 2077 could potentially look much better.

The reveal about the game's engine may also make fans wonder if this is the reason why Cyberpunk 2077 has taken so long to develop. CD Projekt RED waited several years to release a new trailer for the game after it first announced it. If the game looks great and if it runs good too because of the new engine that CD Projekt RED has created, fans probably won't be so upset about the development time.

Cyberpunk 2077 will be released on April 16, 2020 on PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One.
