Cyberpunk 2077 has been plagued by bugs and glitches since its release. The long-awaited game might have had the largest digital release of all time, but for many fans Cyberpunk 2077 quickly became a disappointing mess due to its seemingly unfinished and unpolished nature. While the game has since been patched and had many game-breaking issues resolved, modders have stepped in to try to make the game more enjoyable for players. Even though modding support tools are available, there is currently an issue for players using mods in the game.

There are still quite a lot of things that can ruin a Cyberpunk 2077 playthrough. The game has become a meme on the internet and a cautionary tale for developers and players alike when it comes to rushing releases. That being said, players using mods to try and improve Cyberpunk 2077 and fix these issues outside of developer patches might be opening themselves up to trouble.

CD Projekt Red posted a Twitter warning to players using custom saves and mods in Cyberpunk 2077, saying there is a vulnerability in their external DLL files the game uses. The caution is for using any files from unknown sources, as the "vulnerabilities" can be used to execute code on PCs. Put simply, what this means is that any mods hiding viruses or executable files can use the game's external files to access information on a player's PC or cause the PC to perform actions the user isn't doing on purpose. While the developers are asking players to refrain from using mods for the time being, and are working on fixes if users are put in vulnerable positions, this could possibly lead to further lawsuits against CD Projekt Red.

Security issues have been seen in games before, but for Cyberpunk 2077 this issue is just one more problem for fans of the game and another stain on CD Projekt Red's previous reputation. At the time of this writing, there are no major reports of malicious behavior resulting from these vulnerabilities, so players can only hope the issues are addressed before any of those kinds of acts can happen. The overall problems with the game could be solid justification for other development teams like Rockstar Games to take their time, and it is yet to be seen how much of an effect this latest Cyberpunk 2077 problem will have.

Cyberpunk 2077 is available now for PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One, with PS5 and Xbox Series X versions in development.
