Highlights

  • Cyberpunk 2077's highly anticipated 2.1 update will finally introduce an interactive metro system, fulfilling a long-time request from players.
  • The update will also include a range of other significant changes, such as new missions, side activities, and accessibility options.
  • CD Projekt Red had previously stated that the 2.0 update would be the last big one, but the upcoming 2.1 update suggests there may be more significant changes to come.

CD Projekt Red has recently revealed the surprisingly robust changes coming with the imminent Cyberpunk 2077 2.1 update, including the long-awaited interactive metro system. This update was teased by CD Projekt Red earlier this week, via a tweet where the developer suggested it would include substantial changes and improvements.

Despite being featured heavily in the game's marketing, Cyberpunk 2077 players have never had the option to use the in-game metro system. This struck many as odd, since the world of Cyberpunk 2077 clearly has a fully functional public transit system, and the addition of interactive train rides seemed like a relatively easy and uncomplicated way to add some additional, immersive world-building. Technically, players can use the metro system in the game, but it's only included as an in-universe explanation for fast-travel.

Baldur's Gate 3 and Cyberpunk 2077 Have a Similar Storytelling Problem

Although they are two of the most well-written games of this generation, Baldur's Gate 3 and Cyberpunk 2077 share a narrative dilemma.

Despite CDPR's statements about not adding a metro system to Cyberpunk 2077, it looks like it will be coming to the game via the 2.1 update. The 2.1 update will make the metro system more interactive, allowing players to experience the elevated train rides in real-time. There will still be an option to skip the ride, but the alternative, real-time experience will be an option, with CDPR officials calling it a new "role-playing feature."

Cyberpunk 2077 Update 2.1 Biggest Changes

  • Buffs to Adam Smasher in his boss fight
  • The ability to carry a radio outside of vehicles
  • New car races
  • New vehicles
  • A new quest involving Johnny Silverhand's Porsche 911
  • Dynamic car chases with gangs the player has wronged
  • New motorcycle mechanics, including the ability to perform tricks
  • New accessibility options
  • The option for V to spend time with their romantic partner at will

While the arrival of the more immersive metro functionality is exciting, it arguably pales in comparison to all the other changes that 2.1 will be implementing. The new missions and side activities, alongside additional features and accessibility options, make 2.1 a meaty follow-up to the 2.0 update, which was a substantial reworking of Cyberpunk 2077.

2.1's meaningful changes, including the fulfillment of a long-time request from players, may come as something of a surprise for those following Cyberpunk 2077, as CD Project Red previously stated that 2.0 would be the last big update to the game. According to CDPR, even more details about update 2.1 are on the way, suggesting that the patch could be even more significant.
