Cyberpunk 2077 publisher and developer CD Projekt Red recently shared some early details about the sequel to the ambitious action RPG, but its timeline could leave some fans disappointed. While Cyberpunk 2077 was heavily criticized upon its release on current and last-generation consoles, the team at CD Projekt Red has made good on many of their promises to address the game's numerous bugs. With the successful launch of the Phantom Liberty DLC, fans are now even looking forward to the next iteration in this new franchise.
To say that Cyberpunk 2077 made a rough first impression might be understating things a bit. The various technical issues and underwhelming graphics present, particularly in the PS4 and Xbox One versions of the game, made it virtually unplayable on the older hardware. The game initially ran as advertised on high-end gaming PCs, but the console versions were disappointing, to say the least. CD Projekt Red has been working for years on remedying the situation with the base game, and now, the Cyberpunk 2077 2.0 update as well as the release of the Phantom Liberty expansion seem to deliver on the initial pitch of the game that got fans so excited.
During an investor day presentation, CD Projekt Red chief creative officer Adam Badowski shared new details about the Cyberpunk 2077 sequel currently referred to as "Project Orion." Unfortunately for fans, however, it appears as though the game is still years away as Badowski described it as being in the “conceptual design” stage at the moment. He went on to state that the well-reviewed Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty expansion would be the last "add-on" for the current game.
Project Orion appears to be in good hands as Badowski informed investors that the sequel will be developed by "veterans who were responsible for fine-tuning Cyberpunk 2077 and designing Phantom Liberty." However, the team didn't share much more in the way of details surrounding the game itself, but instead decided to talk about the future of the franchise as a whole.
The series already expanded into the world of streaming with the Netflix anime Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. While the RPG got off to a bit of a rocky start with fans, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners received an overwhelmingly positive reception from critics and viewers from the beginning. Needless to say, fans are more than receptive to the idea of another season of the hit anime.
While the wait for more Cyberpunk 2077 content can leave gamers a bit impatient, it's incredible to think back just a couple of years ago when few players even wanted to discuss a potential sequel. With all the updates and expansions giving gamers something closer to what they were initially promised, however, it seems as though the next title in the Cyberpunk series can't come soon enough.
