Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty continues to sell amazingly, having surpassed 5 million sales as of December 31, 2023, CD Projekt Red has announced. The developer's latest update further underlines the fact that Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty has been a massive sales success since its release.

Initially launched on September 26, Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty debuted to excellent reviews and widespread praise from the fandom. The immensely positive buzz surrounding the game's first and only DLC helped it hit 3 million sales during its launch week, as per CDPR's previous disclosures.

A Cyberpunk 2077 player discovers a neat Phantom Liberty feature after spending 200 hours on the game's first and only piece of DLC.

That strong commercial momentum continued over the following months, with CDPR saying as much in its latest social media update. Taking to Twitter on January 4, the Polish studio revealed that Phantom Liberty sold over 5 million units as of December 31, just five days following its three-month release anniversary. For added context, Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty hit 4.3 million sales in late November, meaning that the expansion managed to add another 700,000 units to its lifetime sales tally over the final month of 2023.

CDPR's previous sales update revealed that Phantom Liberty had an attachment rate of approximately 20%, i.e., that one in five owners of the base game had already bought the $29.99 DLC two months into its release. The fact that Cyberpunk 2077 reached its lowest-ever price on both PC and consoles twice over the final weeks of 2023 ostensibly helped boost the reach of its sole expansion starring Keanu Reeves and Idris Elba. The same can be said for the Ultimate Edition of Cyberpunk 2077, a self-explanatory rerelease that hit the market on December 5.

The base game itself reached 25 million lifetime sales back in October 2023, roughly two months shy of its three-year anniversary. Although CDPR never shared its detailed sales breakdown by platform, one indirect hint on the matter emerged in November by the way of the aforementioned attachment rate percentage; since Phantom Liberty is only available for the current-generation consoles and PC, a 20% DLC attach rate suggests that Cyberpunk 2077 sold approximately 21.5 million units on those platforms by that time. That would put its last-generation console sales at around 3.5 million as of late 2023.

While that number pales in comparison to the game's PC and current-gen console sales, it's still an impressive figure in light of the game's infamous launch that was crippled by countless technical issues on the PS4 and Xbox One. CDPR, for its part, repeatedly vowed not to replicate its past mistakes moving forward, promising that the Cyberpunk 2077 sequel—code-named Orion—will be in a much more polished state at launch, whenever that might be.
