Fans of CD Projekt Red's hugely ambitious FPS title Cyberpunk 2077 were beyond excited when it was confirmed that the sequel – codenamed "Project Orion" – was on the way. While Cyberpunk 2077 didn't have the smoothest of starts, it still managed to cement itself as a memorable entry into the RPG genre with its bold vision, impressive worldbuilding, and inventive upgrade systems. CD Projekt Red's sequel may still be a while away, but that doesn't mean players have nothing to look forward to in the meantime thanks to the release of the Phantom Liberty DLC coming sometime this year.

Night City was already an expansive setting for gamers to explore. Still, many are looking forward to seeing how the developer will continue to expand the multifaceted metropolis through the Phantom Liberty DLC and potentially the Cyberpunk 2077 sequel as well. Players already know that Phantom Liberty will be showing off new sides of the city with a spy-thriller narrative taking place in a brand-new area, but there are questions still lingering around other ways the expansion will build on the base game. One popular aspect that fans hope Phantom Liberty continues to add to is the available romance options for the player's V.

Romance In Cyberpunk 2077

There are plenty of things for gamers to do in Cyberpunk 2077 outside the main storyline, including taking a variety of rides for a spin around the impressively large setting, pursuing some intriguing side missions, or upgrading V with an array of increasingly cool augmentations. The game itself is packed with content, and while this might feel a little overwhelming to begin with, it does mean that gamers have lots of options available to them. Some of these choices include romance, although this isn't as extensive in Cyberpunk 2077 as some might wish.

Players can choose to pursue a few romantic connections if they want, from fleeting encounters like the one with Corpo executive Meredith to more meaningful relationships with fan-favorite characters like Panam or Judy. There are options that celebrate a number of different sexualities, but despite the variety, there are still only a handful of choices. While most fans aren't playing Cyberpunk 2077 solely for the love interests that they're able to pursue, it still adds an entertaining and sometimes really meaningful dimension to the RPG's narrative, in addition to helping with the role-playing element.

Why Phantom Liberty Needs More Love Interests

Phantom Liberty has already promised a lot, including a brand-new storyline, a new area of Night City, and new characters like Idris Elba's shady FIA Agent Solomon Reed. Another update regarding the expansion is set to drop in June – hopefully with a release date as well – but until then, details are a little scarce regarding Phantom Liberty's content. This leaves room for speculation, and fans have been able to imagine all the things they'd want in the final bit of major content coming to Cyberpunk 2077 ahead of the launch of the sequel. There are, of course, more than a few features that players would like to see, but more romance options seem like an obvious way to appease fans.

Not only would a handful of new love interests increase the fairly minimal selection in the base game, but it could also tie into the new storyline in interesting ways, like a tryst with newcomer Reed or returning character Rosalind Myers. Adding new ways to romance additional characters is almost always a popular move with players who just want to experience more of a world and a cast of characters that they've come to love, and Cyberpunk 2077 could improve its inclusivity as well with even more diverse relationships and sexuality options. Although the romantic choices that players could make in the base game offered a good and largely realistic range, games can always push this further and continue to demonstrate that diversity can be both economically beneficial and socially imperative.

Cyberpunk 2077 is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
