After players spent three years exploring every inch of Night City, many of them were looking for something new. Luckily, Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty has given them that with the new war-torn district of Dogtown. Sitting right in the heart of Pacifica, Dogtown is unlike any other part of Night City, which makes it a joy to explore. It is rough and tough, and only the strong can survive within its walls. This makes it a great addition to Cyberpunk 2077, but it could be so much more than that if given the chance.
While Dogtown expands Cyberpunk 2077's world in a fun unique way, CD Projekt Red could do a lot more with the district if it really wanted to. Even though the studio specializes in open-world RPGs, this new district could let it get out of its comfort zone a little bit. Specifically, Dogtown feels like the perfect place for a new type of battle royale experience. It has all the makings of the genre, so someone just needs to be willing to explore the idea even further.
Dogtown Seems Like the Perfect Place for a Battle Royale Game
Cyberpunk 2077's Night City may not be a very safe place to live, but Dogtown takes it to an entirely new level. Instead of being a part of the city, Dogtown is a walled-off section of Pacifica that is ruled by a ruthless tyrant. During the Unification War, NUSA Colonel Kurt Hansen took control of the area and refused to leave. After the war ended, Hansen chose to carve out his own little paradise instead of returning home. So, he made himself a leader, assembled a militia, and separated the region from the rest of the city.
In Cyberpunk 2077, Space Force One is taken down above Night City and crash-lands within Dogtown. It is up to the player to head in there and save the president. However, what they are greeted with is unlike anything they have seen in Night City before. Instead of being just another part of the city, Dogtown is a war-torn region where residents must fight for survival. Cars burn in the streets, ruins dot the landscape, forces fight among themselves, and Hansen's iron grip can be felt on almost every corner.
While Dogtown is a cool departure from the rest of Night City, the concept could actually work very well within a battle royale game as well. Already, residents fight it out in the streets, authorities are not allowed to enter, and Hansen receives all of his supplies via airdrops. Additionally, the entire region feels like it is laid out like a battle royale map with dozens of abandoned buildings waiting to be looted. So, CD Projekt Red just has to be willing to expand upon the idea and bring it to the multiplayer space. It may have never made a multiplayer game on that scale before, but there is always a first time for everything.
While it is extremely unlikely that CD Projekt Red will make a Cyberpunk 2077 battle royale set within Dogtown, it could be a lot of fun if it did. It would not only let players experience this region in a whole new way, but it could also introduce an entirely new group of players to the franchise. It would not be the first single-player franchise to adopt the multiplayer genre either as studios like Naughty Dog and Guerrilla Games are actively working on multiplayer games for their biggest IPs. It remains to be seen if they are actually worth it, but if they are, then CD Projekt Red should definitely follow suit.
