Among the biggest things that CD Projekt RED has been hyping with Cyberpunk 2077 is the depth of its role-playing systems. Not only will players be able to create their own character and customize everything about their Cyberpunk 2077 persona from their appearance and abilities to their backstory, they’ll be free to play how they want. That includes the ability to go for a completely non-lethal playthrough, though doing so won’t be without its own challenges.

CD Projekt RED studio head John Mamais recently sat down for a lengthy interview with OnMSFT that touched upon several Cyberpunk-related topics, including the game’s setting of Night City, the inspirations it’s taken from the wider cyberpunk genre, and even Cyberpunk 2077’s many side quests. Amid all of this, the conversation eventually turned to non-lethal gameplay.

When asked about it, Mamais did stress that, “We’re balancing it specifically so that you can get through it without killing anyone. There’s a non-lethal route.” This extends to Cyberpunk 2077's bosses, granting players even more ways to approach these more challenging enemies and all of the other obstacles that the game will throw at them.

As such, however, putting aside the range of futuristic guns, cybernetic weapons, and other killing machines at their disposal will make things much more difficult than in a more typical playthrough. Although Cyberpunk 2077 will offer players plenty of tools and abilities to aid in a kill-free run, Mamais made it clear that it will take them “a lot longer to play.” He summed things up by saying, “The easiest way [to play the game] is to just gun right through it.”

Cyberpunk 2077 new game plus

Elsewhere in the interview, Mamais discussed the possibility of the game being released for other platforms besides the ones it’s been confirmed for already. In reiterating on his previous thoughts on the likelihood of a Nintendo Switch port of Cyberpunk 2077, he also revealed that CD Projekt RED experimented with bringing the game to VR, but confirmed that “we’re not doing anything with VR.”

As for the next generation of consoles beginning later this year with the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, Mamais stated that “we’re not focusing on that yet. We’re focusing on current gen.” That said, CD Projekt RED has more in store beyond the game itself, including Cyberpunk 2077's recently-delayed multiplayer mode, so it’s possible that could change once development has wrapped up.

Cyberpunk 2077 will be out on September 17 for PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One.
