There are many connections to last year’s Cyberpunk: Edgerunners in Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty, including the surprise appearance of Stella Ramos - the sister of Sasha Yakovleva. Produced by famed anime house Studio Trigger in conjunction with CD Projekt Red, Edgerunners takes place before the events of Cyberpunk 2077 and tells the tragic story of David Martinez, a young edgerunner who looks to make a name for himself on the rough streets of Night City. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners was met with near-universal acclaim for its stylish animation, gripping plot, and detailed worldbuilding - and this has helped fuel Cyberpunk 2077’s resurgence following its infamous 2020 launch.

Later Cyberpunk 2077 updates have added Easter eggs and other references to Edgerunners, starting with a small patch that heralded the show’s Netflix launch last September. Said patch gave players access to David’s signature jacket and Rebecca’s trademark shotgun as equippable items, as well as a drink named in the latter’s honor. This September’s massive Cyberpunk 2077 Update 2.0 added more references to Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, such as a series of memorials players can visit to pay their respects to David and his crew. Sure enough, the subsequent Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty DLC contained even more nods to Edgerunners, allowing players to explore several notable locations from the show.

CD Projekt Red reveals how much money it spent on fixing Cyberpunk 2077 and repairing the game's reputation.

According to Dexerto and the official Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Twitter account, players can meet an NPC with deep connections to the anime near the beginning of Phantom Liberty’s main storyline as well. During one of Phantom Liberty’s side quests, V meets with a dark-haired NCPD officer named Stella Ramos. Both she and V hide from the drug lord Dodger and his goons by leaning back in a car near Dogtown’s entrance. Stella has more significance than it would seem at first glance, as she happens to be the older sister of Sasha Yakovleva - a member of Maine’s netrunner crew from before David Martinez joined them.

While she never appeared in Cyberpunk: Edgerunners proper, Sasha was featured prominently in a music video released to promote the show. In this video, Sasha goes off on her own to break into Cyberpunk 2077's infamous Arasaka Corporation on an ill-advised mission - only to be killed for her troubles. She is then replaced by Lucy, one of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners’ main protagonists and the love interest of David.

Stella's relationship with Sasha was confirmed by the Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Twitter account, which posted artwork of the sisters by Kuvshinov_iyla late last week. Very few Cyberpunk 2077 players could have predicted such a connection to Edgerunners in Phantom Liberty, but it is even more proof that both works are connected in the larger Cyberpunk universe - which is set to continue in CDPR’s tentatively titled Project Orion.

Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty is available for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S.
