A new video game based on the popular Creepshow franchise has been announced by AMC Networks and horror publisher/production outfit DreadXP. The two teams will be partnering on the game based on Shudder’s popular series created by Greg Nicotero.
It’s been 40 years since the release of the George Romero and Stephen King original film, Creepshow, which performed high at the box office and immediately established itself as a frontrunner in the anthology horror genre with its innovative storytelling and 1950s comic-inspired look. Two sequels followed, one in 1987, based on stories by King, and in 2006 without King or Romero's involvement. In 2019, the Shudder network released the first season of a new Creepshow adaptation with the movie’s signature style and format. It is currently going into its fourth season.
AMC Network and DreadXP announced (via Rue Morgue) that the game, due out in 2024 on multiple platforms, will retain the series anthology format, offering multiple stories crossing gameplay genres and tones. It will be primarily based on the Shudder series rather than the original films. Showrunner Nicotero is set to executive produce the project with Cartel Entertainment and creative director Brian Clarke of DarkStone Digital. AMC's VP of Games Clayton Neuman says, “after playing the Dread X Collection game anthologies, and seeing Brian’s twisted genius at work in The Mortuary Assistant, we knew we had found the right partners for this project. This game will surprise, delight, and terrify Creepshow and horror fans alike, and we can’t wait for players to get their hands on it.”
“The Creepshow brand continues to spread its monstrous wings,” Nicotero said. This is exciting news for both gamers and fans of the franchise, which has been scaring audiences for four decades. The film’s unique blend of horror and humor was before its time in the '80s, a legacy that continues through the three seasons of the Shudder series today. The show’s anthology format provides much in the way of unique, twisty storylines that are perfect for gameplay and engagement, offering a limitless assortment of threats that grow with each passing season of the series.
This is not the first time the Creepshow franchise has bled into other formats. A series of books based on the show published by Scholastic Books has already released two literary adaptations, with more to come.
Creepshow, the video game, is due out on multiple platforms in 2024.
