PlayStation's State of Play got off to an explosive start with new gameplay and announcements for Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time. The newest installment of the Crash Bandicoot story picks up where it left off, with Cortex escaping his interdimensional prison, but fans may start to understand Cortex's point of view.

During the gameplay demonstration, several new features were shown off, including wall-running, rope-swinging, and changing environments. One of the most exciting features mentioned is different playable characters. Crash may be the main character, but his younger sister Coco will play a more prominent role in the story. Developers confirmed that Coco will be a playable character throughout the whole story, meaning all of Crash's levels.

Neo Cortex and Dingo Dile have also been confirmed as playable characters. Neo Cortex is seen using his blaster during gameplay to change enemies into platforms to use to move through levels. Cortex's gameplay starts on a snow-filled level, so he may have fallen victim to falling through another dimension as well. Regardless, Cortex's blaster ability will prove handy for different challenges within his levels.

At the conclusion of Crash Bandicoot: Warped, Dingo Dile had retired from the life of a villain to open a diner. Sadly, Dingo Dile is introduced to the story after witnessing his diner burning, and being sucked into a different dimension. Now armed with a vacuum-like weapon instead of his flamethrower rocket launcher, Dingo Dile can use his vacuum to overcome various obstacles and has the ability to tailspin to defeat enemies or destroy crates.

Currently, only Coco has been confirmed to be a playable character on every level, but it seems Cortex and Dingo Dile will have levels specifically for them. Crash Bandicoot 4 levels will be dynamic, so each level will have a new look and feel when players return to it. This may be also true for Cortex and Dingo Dile levels, so players can complete new challenges with them as well.

Coco will also have different unlockable skins that are earned throughout levels. There has been no mention of Cortex or Dingo Dile having unlockable skins, but having them as playable characters is a big step for the franchise. When Crash Bandicoot 4 releases, Crash will be joined by Coco, Cortex, and Dingo Dile throughout the 3D platformer.
