Since his debut on the PlayStation 1, Crash Bandicoot has been one of the most iconic mascot characters from the early boom of 3D platformers. Now, the long-awaited sequel was reportedly a major success.

Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time first launched in October 2020 as the first true continuation of the franchise in over a decade, following 2008's Crash: Mind Over Mutant. The sequel would feature the return of several classic elements from the franchise, including the Aku Aku masks and tons of Wumpa Fruit to collect. The newly added "Quantum Masks" also offered a fresh spin on the franchise's standard gameplay, offering unique quirks and gimmicks based on the game's dimension-hopping themes. Crash Bandicoot 4 Sales Were Better Than Expected

As reported by Insider Gaming, an update from Toys for Bob design director Toby Schadt reveals that Crash Bandicoot 4 recently passed a major milestone. The update, coming as a change to Schadt's Linkedin profile, suggests that Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time recently passed 5 million copies sold since its 2020 debut. The shift also suggests Toys for Bob is pleased with Crash 4's performance, labeling it as a "well-received sequel." Crash Bandicoot 4 previously received a nomination for "Best Family Game" at the 2020 Game Awards.

Crash Bandicoot 4's stellar sales milestone comes as the revival's developer recently confirmed a major change for its future. Earlier this year, Toys for Bob announced it would be leaving Activision at the end of February, shifting into a position as an independent developer and partnering with Microsoft for a new project. Toys for Bob cited the freedom and flexibility of being an indie developer as a major reason for the change, being able to work on its own projects while still partnering with bigger brands like Sony and Microsoft.

While Toys for Bob has yet to announce its next major project, rumors have swirled about the future of the Crash Bandicoot developer. A recent rumor suggested that Toys for Bob may be working on a Spyro the Dragon 4 to join its Crash Bandicoot sequel in the near future. Similar to the N.Sane Trilogy, Toys for Bob also developed Spyro Reignited Trilogy as an HD remake compilation of the first three Spyro the Dragon games. Crash Bandicoot 4's success combined with a potential Spyro the Dragon sequel to come should signal exciting things to come from the newly independent studio.
