  • If successful, Trainwreckstv will become the first player to publicly unbox the knife trinity, although it's uncertain what he plans to do with the knives afterwards. Counter-Strike: Global Offensive is currently experiencing a surge in popularity ahead of the release of Counter-Strike 2.

Twitch streamer Trainwreckstv has embarked on one of the rarest Counter-Strike: Global Offensive case-opening challenges in history, spending tons of money in the process. Gamers will spend hundreds of thousands for Counter-Strike: Global Offensive skins, but this challenge could set Trainwreckstv back even more than that in the worst-case scenario.

With March's huge reveal of Counter-Strike 2, the hype has continued to build for the release of the sequel. Right now, many players are taking part in the Counter-Strike 2 Limited Test, and gamers seeing their friends enjoy the new game has only made the wait more agonizing for many out there. Its increase in popularity has seen many streamers join in on the fun as of late, with case openings being a key part of that. In fact, streamer Dr Disrespect recently unboxed an incredibly rare knife in Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, but it's nothing compared to what Trainwreck is looking to achieve.

Trainwreckstv is looking to unbox the Counter-Strike: Global Offensive knife trinity, meaning the Emerald, Ruby, and Sapphire Karambit knives. Each one is a vibrant shade of green, red, and blue respectively, and are some of the rarest knives in Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. As of right now, he has already unboxed the Emerald and Ruby Karambits, with just the Sapphire left. Given the chance of unboxing a knife in-game is 0.26% per case, the likelihood of him completing the challenge is slim. However, he seems committed to throwing whatever funds are necessary at the challenge, so he certainly has the resources to do so.

In theory, there's a chance he simply never unboxes the knife, even with thousands upon thousands of cases opened. Despite all of these knives costing tens of thousands of dollars, it speaks to the impossibility of this challenge that it would still be cheaper to simply buy them. However, that takes the fun out of the hunt here. If Trainwreckstv is successful in his endeavor, he'll become the first-ever player to publicly unbox the knife trinity. It's possible it has been done before, but if it has, said player never came forward with their achievement. Once he has all three knives, it's unclear what he plans to do with them. With the future of Counter-Strike: Global Offensive skin gambling uncertain at the moment, that seems to rule out that avenue, at least.

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive is breaking Steam records ahead of the release of Counter-Strike 2. While the series has always been massively popular among PC gamers, it seems to have hit another level of acclaim among players at the moment. It's impressive to see a game that's over a decade old go from strength to strength in this way, and the FPS genre is better for having one of its best at peak popularity.

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive is available for PC and legacy platforms.
