It may not be something that anyone thought they wanted, and it certainly isn't something that anyone was expecting, but it turns out that Cookie Clicker is coming to Steam. The original was available online, and later it was ported to mobile devices, but this will be the first time since its initial release eight years ago that it gets a full Steam version. Surprisingly, the announcement trailer below does a great job of hyping the game up, and many are finding themselves feeling nostalgic for what claims to be "the game that defined the idle genre."

There is some truth to this claim, however bold it may be. Back in 2013 when Cookie Clicker released, idle games as a genre were not nearly as popular or as prevalent in the free-to-play sphere of gaming. Now it seems as though an idle game comes up everywhere players look, and much of that can be attributed to Cookie Clicker's success.

For players that aren't familiar with the eight year old game, the premise is incredibly simple. As players click on the screen, they make cookies. At first, this will happen just one cookie for each click, but players can sell cookies to increase the rate. Eventually, they'll have extra cursors clicking and making cookies automatically, Grandmas to help with the baking, and even a cookie farm where players can grow organic cookies. As players have likely come to expect with other idle games, this quickly spins out of control until players are making unfathomable amounts of cookies per second.

To sweeten the deal even more, Cookie Clicker shares that it has eight years of updates under its belt, and this port isn't just a one and done thing either. According to the trailer, more updates are on the way, and the game will continue to be supported during its lifetime on Steam. Players can even enjoy music from C418, the composer best known for his work on Minecraft. Finally, the trailer ends out by encouraging players to "bake [their] legacy" before revealing that the game will release on September 1st on Steam.

While the browser and mobile versions of the game are free, the Steam version will instead cost players $5. While this may seem like a lot, Cookie Clicker does offer tons of content and is well worth the price for those that enjoy this genre of game. The Steam page is already up, but for those wanting to try the game out before it releases on Steam, why not go check out the browser version of Cookie Clicker?
