Sony has confirmed the start and finish dates for Concord's beta periods. Concord will run two different betas.
Concord is a 5v5 hero-based first-person shooter that has received a mixed reception throughout its development. Concord is the culmination of Sony's attempt to make its mark on the hero shooter genre after the acquisition of developer Firewall Studios in 2023. Players take the role of "Freegunners," who are essentially space-faring mercenaries, and with 16 to choose from, each character has their own abilities and roles to fill within the game. Concord's influence from IPs such as Overwatch and Guardians of the Galaxy is amply evident from the promotional screenshots and various trailers that fans have been shown, calling into question the game's originality. Despite this reception, the opportunity to try the game firsthand may be able to turn the tide of the backlash wave that Concord has been receiving.
2024 is the Year of the Hero Shooter
2024 is shaping up as the year of the hero shooter, with new releases and thriving titles defining the genre's resurgence.
The beta for Concord will run in two phases, with the first being an early access weekend running from July 12 to July 14, and the second being an open beta running from July 18 to July 21. Anyone who has pre-ordered Concord can take part in both of these beta periods, but the first phase will give out four additional codes for buyers, allowing players to bring up to four friends along and make a perfect 5-man team for the game. These additional codes will only function from July 12 to July 14. The beta run will allow optional crossplay between PC and PlayStation 5 players, as well as granting players the opportunity to try all the 16 characters that will be available upon Concord's launch.

Players will get to duke it out across four maps throughout their time in early access. The open beta run later in the month will add a fifth map to the roster for gamers to sink their claws into. The beta phase will allow players to battle in four of the six game modes available in Concord. Trophy Hunt, Cargo Run, and Clash Point will be available to play throughout the early access window. Much like maps, the open beta weekend will be adding an additional game mode with Area Control. This does leave Takedown and Signal Chase out of the beta runs entirely, which is a shame considering Signal Chase especially sounds rather interesting among the line-up of game modes that Concord has to offer.
Many consider the hero-shooter genre to be getting extremely saturated as of late. Concord is equally caught up in this distaste, and gamers haven't been afraid to let developers know about this. These open beta runs may be the opportunity that Sony and Firewalk Studios are after to make Concord stand out amid the gaming landscape.
