Matt Reeves's The Batman, the DC side-series not a part of the then-current Ben Affleck-Snyderverse series, which is being allowed to continue, recently announced its sequel. In line with that, Colin Farrell was asked what he knew about the sequel to the movie in which he played right-hand goon to Carmine Falcone, an Oswald Cobblepot still on the rise and not yet in his heyday as Batman arch-villain and umbrella aficionado, the Penguin.
A recent Variety interview saw the Oscar-nominated star of The Banshees of Inisherin talking about what he knew of the upcoming The Batman sequel and what he could reveal about his HBO series spinoff.
While Farrell revealed, according to the actor, in total honesty, that he had no idea about the movie, he did say he knew that the HBO series was supposed to be eight episodes of him in extensive grody makeup to turn him into the larger-than-life villain. The series is, according to Farrell (and if plans haven’t changed), set to open a week after the events of The Batman—inside a Gotham that saw itself flooded when the Riddler’s followers helped the maniac destroy the levees that kept the sea from flooding the city—and where the series ends events will pick up right in The Batman 2 when it comes out in July of 2025.
Farrell goes on to say he’d love to be in the film and that the first one was a blast to work on. He says that he’s read the first five episode scripts for his upcoming series, indicates that there’s a major female character but not one he’d consider a love interest, and that they managed to get the extensive makeup for Oswald Cobblepot, his starring character in the upcoming The Penguin, down to under two hours.
The Batman was the first film since 1992’s Batman Returns to see Catwoman (Zoë Kravitz) and the Penguin sharing screentime in an attempt to establish a new Batman continuity on the big screen. The epic-length movie ended with the death of Carmine Falcone and a power vacuum up for grabs for his criminal empire. The Penguin, the upcoming 8-episode series set in the same universe will, much like the subplot involving Oswald Cobblepot (Robin Lord Taylor) on Fox’s Gotham, see the Penguin become THE Penguin as he steps in to shore up all the loose ends and become a crime king in his own right (when he’s not being walloped by the Dark Knight and tossed into Blackgate, that is).
The Batman is streaming on HBO Max. The Penguin is going into production in February.
