What Makes Akito the Exiled a Good Code Geass Spinoff

Code Geass is an undisputed classic, not just in the mech genre, but in anime in general. But is there merit to its later spinoff, Akito the Exiled?

The trailer revealed the actors who'll play the protagonist duo, the opening theme, as well as a number of staff at animation studio Sunrise who will be working on Code Geass: Rozé of the Recapture. The upcoming project is set to be a four-part theatrical release, the first of which is slated to premiere in May 2024, during the Spring anime season.

Initially announced as Code Geass: Z of the Recapture back in 2020, the upcoming project is set in the Code Geass universe created by Goro Taniguchi and Ichiro Okouki, and follows two protagonists, Rozé and Ash, voiced by Kohei Amasaki (Haruo Yaguchi, Hi Score Girl) and Makoto Furukawa (Kencho, Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead) respectively. When it was first announced, Z of the Recapture was introduced as an upcoming TV anime that continued from where Lelouch of the Re;surrection left off.

The upcoming Rozé of the Recapture tetralogy will be directed by Yoshimitsu Ohashi at Sunrise, the same studio that produced the Code Geass TV anime, with scripts written by Noboru Kimura and Kumiko Sakamoto serving as editor, while CLAMP is once again credited with the character designs, which were then adapted for animation by Takahiro Kimura and Hidekazu Shimamura.

Other staff members credited in the production of Code Geass: Rozé of the Recapture include animators Takahiro Kimura (who unfortunately passed away in February), Hidekazu Shimamura, Seiichi Nakatani, Satoshi Shigeta, and Takashi Hashimoto; art director Kazuhiro Obata; CGI director Shuji Shinoda and colour designers Ami Katsuna and Yuichi Kuboki, with Hiroyuki Chiba as director of photography and the series' 3DCG by BUEMON Inc.

Jin Aketagawa serves as sound director while Kenji Kawai composes the music. The trailer also revealed the theme song, "Running In My Head", performed by MIYAVI. The first part of Code Geass: Rozé of the Recapture premieres May 2024.
