The longshot kill is currently the latest way to earn mastery camos, but it’s quite a challenging reward to perfect. Most players dread the longshot kill since Modern Warfare 2 weapons have different ranges for longshot distances.
With each weapon class having a different minimum distance to count as a longshot, mastering and nailing a longshot kill can be a feat. Additionally, Modern Warfare 2 maps are designed for close-range combat, which makes perfecting a longshot kill nearly impossible for players.

Modern Warfare 2 Longshot Distance
Each Modern Warfare 2 weapon class has a specific longshot distance for the kill to count, and they are as follows:
- Shotguns: 12.5m
- Sub Machine Guns: 30m
- Battle Rifles: 38m
- Assault Rifles: 38m
- Pistols: 20m
- Marksman Rifles: 38m
- Light Machine Guns: 38m
- Sniper Rifles: 50m
How to Get Longshot Kills
To get a longshot kill in MW2, players need to secure a kill at the required distance of the specific weapon class. For instance, a player must kill from at least 20m when using a pistol such as the Desert Eagle. Players can get longshot kills in two ways:
Mounting
Players should post up and mount on a head glitch or corner to get a clear sightline of enemies. When opponents appear, use a long-range scope to aim and kill at the correct distance for it to count. In a fast-paced game like Modern Warfare, it’s often difficult to tell the distance between a player and the opponent, but some weapons, like XTEN Angel-40, display the distance at which the gun is aimed. Unlocking such weapons makes it easier for players to quickly identify whether a kill will count as a long shot.
Camping
Players should camp and position themselves at a distance that counts as a longshot kill. Although camping isn’t suitable for MW2’s battle royale, it’s an easy way to complete a longshot challenge. Simply identify the required longshot distance for the weapon’s class, get in position, and kill enemies as they appear.
Modern Warfare 2 has an added feature that informs players whether they’ve made a longshot kill. When players land a longshot, they receive a pop-up reading “Longshot” with the distance of the kill. Battle, Assault, Marksman, and LMGs have the same longshot distance, so it’s easier to land a longshot kill with these riffles.
