Ever since Cobra Kai moved to Netflix the show had a two-year streak of premiering its new season on New Year’s day, however, Johnny Lawrence isn’t known for sticking to habits and that might explain the decision to move up season 5’s release for early September.
Cobra Kai has proved to be one very shrewd acquisition from Netflix with both seasons 3 and 4 topping the streaming charts when they came out, which is probably why showrunners are happy to keep the ball moving fast and decided to shoot two full seasons in 2021. See, having wrapped up filming season 4 in the spring of last year, Cobra Kai’s fifth season was shot between September and December, even before the previous one had premiered.
That means fans can now reap the benefits of the Cobra Kai family’s work with a new trailer that picks up right from last season’s bitter finale and promises viewers they’ll have Johnny Lawrence’s favorite rock songs stuck in their heads come September 9. While it’s Netflix tradition to release previews closer to a show's premiere, this one has a lot of content, teasing Terry Silver’s expanding Cobra Kai empire, Daniel and Chozen quest to take him down and -of course- Johnny’s trip down to Mexico to rescue Miguel, though his decision to bring Robby will leave many as perplexed as the teenager is.
One character that is barely present in the trailer is Cobra Kai champion Tory Nichols, who won’t be necessarily basking in the glory of her new title nor too thrilled with her sensei, but what little is seen of her looks rather angry during training. Over on the Miyagi-Do front, Samantha appears to be struggling with her own demons, especially as she might feel the title that cost her father so much was robbed from her hands.
Disgraced sensei John Kreese is also absent, though it’s daily likely Martin Kove will return in some capacity as Daniel and Chozen try to untangle Silver’s treacherous scheme. The one thing many Miyagi-Verse fans will be keeping an eye out for is whether Hilary Swank will appear in Cobra Kai, as the Julie Pierce character she played in early in her career now stands as the sole Karate Kid alumni yet to make a comeback.
Netflix is currently enduring a tough time as a slight dip in subscriber numbers and doubts over the company's growth potential have plundered its stock market value. Although The Witcher is still a solid Holiday contender, the decision to bring out Cobra Kai early might be telling of a strategy to spread out more reliable content that draws paying customers.
Cobra Kai's fifth season will premiere exclusively on Netflix on September 9, 2022.
