One of Nikola Tesla's inventions, the Tesla coil, has been featured in countless horror movies, and has become a staple of the horror genre. Thus, it was just a matter of time before the inventor himself was the subject of a horror title. Close to the Sun is a first-person horror game heavily influenced by Tesla, and its first trailer debuted today at Gamescom 2018.

In the short trailer, audiences get a strong feel for the terrifying environment they'll have to explore in the game. While Close to the Sun certainly embodies the spirit of Tesla, viewers might also notice influences from games like Bioshock as well -- especially since the setting is on a ship out at sea.

The title takes place during the height of Nikola Tesla's career in the late 1890's, and has players navigating a strange and mysterious ship complex created by Tesla, along with an assortment of other great minds from around the world who work there. Everything goes horribly wrong, as they often do in these situations, and players, taking the role of a young journalist, will have to deal with the fallout while searching for their sister.

The name Close to the Sun could be a reference to Icarus, the myth about a boy who flies too close to the sun with a pair of wings made of feathers and wax. It is a popular story to demonstrate the dangers of hubris, or pride. We imagine that the pride of those in the complex is likely what led to their downfall.

What will players face on the massive science ship? The trailer shows that some of the residents have gone a little mad, and there are enough of dead bodies to indicate plenty of danger. Players will also encounter several mysteries to be uncovered, curious beings of light, puzzles, of course, lots of Tesla coils.

Close to the Sun isn't the only horror title making its debut at Gamescom 2018. Supermassive Games, creators of Until Dawn, released a premiere trailer for The Man of Medan, the studio's latest. The game features a group of four friends who are searching for deep sea treasure. According to the trailer, this unleashes some kind of curse, and the group starts dropping like flies. This is also the first game in what Supermassive is calling The Dark Pictures Anthology. The Man of Medan is scheduled to release in 2019.

Still in the realm of horror -- but just barely -- Nintendo has announced that Luigi's Mansion is returning to the Nintendo 3DS as a full-on remake. The title was originally released in 2001 for the Gamecube, but will be cleaned up and ported to the handheld console on October 12, just in time for Halloween.

Close to the Sun is scheduled to release for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC in Q1 2019.
