  • A recently surfaced rumor claimed that the Xbox console exclusive Clockwork Revolution was targeting a 2025 release.
  • Developer inXile Entertainment squashed that "leak" with a hilarious meme based on Netflix's The Umbrella Academy series.
  • The studio still isn't ready to commit to a release date or window for Clockwork Revolution.

The recent rumor narrowing down Clockwork Revolution's release window was false. That's according to inXile Entertainment itself, as the studio dismissed this speculation in quite a cheeky fashion.

On June 14, Reddit user KekanKok shared an extensive list of unannounced game projects whose mentions they have discovered while reviewing a variety of actor resumes on IMDB. Among many other entries, their findings included a reference to "CWRKRV," which was found in the CV of a voice actor claiming to be involved in inXile's upcoming Xbox console exclusive. The listing implied that Clockwork Revolution was targeting a 2025 release.

inXile Memes Clockwork Revolution's Release Year 'Leak'

inXile responded to the finding within hours of it emerging online, labeling it as false. It did so in quite an entertaining fashion, with the company's official Twitter account posting a "Vanya and Five drive by each other" meme from Netflix's complicated The Umbrella Academy series. The image characterized the "leak" as a case of "a voice actor making up a release date for their IMDB," on top of communicating that the developer itself still isn't certain when Clockwork Revolution could be ready to hit the market.

The meme amassed nearly 100,000 views within 24 hours of being posted, amusing many a fan. Reading between the lines, this joking dismissal implies that Clockwork Revolution is still in a somewhat early stage of development. That's largely because AAA studios often commit to internal release year targets about halfway through production, around the time when their project has a playable alpha build. If inXile is truly still in the process of figuring out when its next game could be finished, it stands to reason that fans won't get to experience Clockwork Revolution's time-bending gameplay loop for at least several more years.

The average AAA development cycle is five years long at minimum nowadays. According to one previous insider report, Clockwork Revolution has been in the works since at least 2021. While that might imply that the game won't be going gold until at least 2026, its development timeline could ostensibly be even longer, not least because it is currently unclear when exactly the project left pre-production.

While inXile has already released several titles since joining Xbox Game Studios in 2018, Clockwork Revolution will be its first project that was greenlit and developed exclusively in the company's Microsoft era. The game itself is a first-person action RPG in a steampunk setting, which has already elicited a number of comparisons to the BioShock and Dishonored series. Aside from time-traveling mechanics revolving around a device called the Chronometer, Clockwork Revolution is also promised to feature deep RPG systems conducive to replayability.
