The World of Warcraft: Classic is partly dedicated to reliving the past, which makes the re-release of the Wrath of the Lich King, which already happened in 2008, all kinds of meta. Some players have visited the cold tundra before, either in the Warcraft 3 expansion or 14 years ago, but plenty of curious and determined new adventurers are going to Northrend for the first time in WoW: Classic.
There's a quest that players can get in Old Azeroth that they can follow to either location, Wrath of the Lich King: To Northrend!, which they can get from Chromie, but it's not a requirement. Players can leave from one of two cities, Stormwind or Menethil Harbor. Both of these ports are located in the Eastern Kingdoms, but the boat from Menethil Harbor goes to Valgarde in Howling Fjord, and the Stormwind departure leads to Valiance Keep in the eastern zone of Borean Tundra.
Valgarde
Arthas Menethil made landfall slightly west of here in Dragonblight, a neighboring zone, but players familiar with the vintage RTS game will still recognize some familiar landmarks and place names that also appeared in the old campaign. The tale of Prince Arthas and his foray into Northrend for the last time is one told throughout the human kingdoms, and Alliance lore and characters seem to have a deeper emotional connection to their mission.
A Return To Resting
There are a whole lot of quests that consist of killing quotas and carrying packages, which is fine but mindless and dull. Those who are interested in learning about some of the local cultures would appreciate the change of pace provided by "A Return To Resting."
It's a simple quest that leads into an interesting area surrounding a handy bit of local transportation called the Great Lift. All that's required is to travel to an ancient vrykul resting ground, return some significant artifacts, and put the perturbed spirits to rest eternally.
The Shining Light
This is the first quest in a short two-quest chain that gives the player a chance to work with the Argent Crusade, one of the dominant neutral factions in the zone. The second part is called "Guided By The Light" and it's two quests in one.
Ares the Oathbound asks the player to travel north from Valgarde and find a Sacred Artifact and return it to an NPC within the keep. There's experience given for both finding the artifact and returning it, which is really twice the credit given for one quest.
Feeding the Survivors
This is one of the first quests most players do when they discover the west coast of Howling Fjord. Gathering meat is important for leveling the Cooking skill, this quest can be used to gather resources and gain some rep with an important local faction.
The Tuskarr are a neutral race, and they offer several interesting items to characters that have a sufficient reputation. Do this quest and others in the area not only to make friends but also to acquire better fishing gear and other goodies.
Valiance Keep
Located off the southern coast of the Borean Tundra, Valiance Keep is a city built almost entirely on docks and scaffolding in the water and the shoreline needs constant defense. Players that choose Valiance Keep as their starting point will find most of their targets are Horde interests, as opposed to the opposite side of the continent where the enemies are either locals or the environment itself.
Enemies Of The Light
Several quests take the character into the nearby settlement of Farshire, which is on the coast northwest of Valiance Keep, and this is one of them. It's a simple kill-quota quest, which is an ideal rep grind to start with, and the players will be able to complete the other Farshire quests in the same trip.
Harbinger Vurenn, a representative of the Argent Crusade, offers this quest. It's connected to the storyline of the Argent Crusade and their battle against the Scourge.
Word On The Street
One of the many quests available to players that includes some Northrend history and an interesting storyline, "Word On The Street" starts a quest chain that includes ten steps. Some involve simple fetch quests or delivering messages, so there are some easy experience points to be had here.
The whole series involves both exploration and interaction in almost every corner of Valiance Keep and the surrounding countryside. Even those who aren't into long quest chains should think about completing this one just for the lore and intrigue involved.
Scouting The Sinkholes
A player doesn't have to get the breadcrumb quest to travel north to the Fizzlecrank Airstrip, but it's nice to have a few extra experience points waiting just for showing up. Players that want to level in the northern part of the zone before moving south or west can pick up this quest, which leads to a chain of quests that involve research and destruction on a variety of levels.
The tasks involve either writing about or blowing up the local Nerubian investigation, starting with some minor research on some mysterious sinkholes.
Check In With Bixie
Players that want to get a head start on killing bugs, exploring the area of the zone that leads into Dragonblight, and grinding rep with the Valiance Expedition should complete this quest and the three that follow. They lead east from the Fizzlecrank Airstrip to places like the Dens of Dying and the bug-invested Temple City of En'kilah, on the eastern border of the zone.
