Highlights

  • Civilization 7's development and release plans remain a mystery, with no news regarding gameplay or potential release window.
  • It is uncertain how far along in development Civilization 7 currently is, but Firaxis has a history of announcing and revealing new entries relatively quickly.
  • Although fans may see something from Civilization 7 in 2024, it is unlikely that the game will be released in the same year due to Firaxis' busy schedule and past release patterns.

After three decades in the industry, it seems fair to say that the Civilization series is one of the most beloved strategy franchises in all of gaming. Predominantly a PC series for most of its life, Civilization has found a whole new wave of success thanks to Civilization 6's console ports, and moving forward, it seems likely that Firaxis will want to continue to make sure that it's catering to all markets, which could lead to a lengthier development period for Civilization 7.

Announced rather nonchalantly at the beginning of the year, Civilization 7 was confirmed to be in development by 2K alongside the announcement that Firaxis veteran Jake Solomon would be leaving the studio, and that Heather Hazen would be taking over. Since then, fans have heard nothing about Civilization 7's development, gameplay, or potential release window, which means that it might be time for some more Civ 7 news in 2024.

What Fans Can Expect From Civilization 7 in 2024

When Fans Can Expect to See More Civilization 7 News

When Civilization 7 was first announced in February of this year, it wasn't clear just how far along in development it was at that point. If, by the time of its announcement in February, Civilization 7 had just entered full development, then the game still might be quite a ways off, and fans might not get to see a full reveal for it for some time. But if Civilization 7 had already been in development for some time back in February, then Firaxis might be ready to show something pretty soon.

Regardless of how far along in development Civilization 7 is right now, Firaxis does have a history of announcing a new Civilization entry, and then following it up pretty quickly with a full reveal and more information. It's already been almost an entire year since that initial Civ 7 announcement, and that could either mean that a full reveal is right around the corner, or that Firaxis is breaking a notable tradition for the franchise. While it hasn't been confirmed in any official capacity, it does seem at least fairly likely that Firaxis will release more information about Civilization 7 in 2024.

The Chances of a 2024 Release Date for Civilization 7 Are Slim

But while it seems likely that fans will get to see at least something from Civilization 7 in 2024, it seems much less plausible that Civilization 7 will actually release in 2024, though past Civ patterns might suggest the opposite. The Civilization series has a pattern of being announced and released in the same year. Civilization 5 was first revealed in February 2010, and launched in September of the same year, and Civilization 6 was first announced in May 2016, and hit store shelves that October.

There's a very slim possibility that if Civilization 7 gets a full reveal trailer in early 2024, then it could end up releasing later on in the year. Of course, this is just pure speculation, and there's really no way of knowing Civilization 7's release plans before Firaxis or 2K makes an official statement. Additionally, Firaxis has been exceptionally busy recently, not only adding new post-launch content to Civ 6 and the XCOM series, but also developing Marvel's Midnight Suns, which was a huge project for the team that presumably took up much of the studio's resources. It might still be a long time before fans see Civilization 7 in the flesh.
