Sid Meier's Civilization 6 has many features that allow players to simulate the running and growth of their own countries. One of these features that is a key aspect to achieving domination victories is the ability to take over the cities of other countries.

During wars, leaders can invade cities of the opposing side with their troops and attack the city center. However, due to Civilization 6 adding the district features, invaders have new ways of cutting off supplies during an invasion.

Taking Over Cities

Civilization 6 Wonders

The flat-out way to take over a city is to take over the city center. However, the city center won't be easy to take over initially. If a city has any kind of walls, it will have access to ranged attacks. If the city has an encampment, it will additionally have access to ranged attacks. These ranged attacks will have equal strength to the civilizations' strongest ranged strength except for airplanes.

In order to get rid of these ranged attacks, the outer defense must be destroyed. These district ranged attacks can only fire upon troops and cannot attack enemy encampments.

When defending, cities have a combat strength that is added on by the following.

  • Base Strength (Equal to the strongest melee unit owned by the civilization - 10 or the unit garrisoned inside the city)
  • Wall Defenses
  • Specialty Districts
  • Being built on a hill
  • Being a capital

Damaging districts are very helpful when it comes to whittling down city defenses during an invasion.

Units for Invasion

Civ 6 Egypt Leader

The following units are helpful for invasions due to their ability to either break down or completely bypass defenses. They are:

  • Battering Rams (Only useful against Ancient Walls)
  • Siege Towers (Will bypass walls completely and allow for a takeover with walls still standing)
  • Catapult
  • Bombard
  • Artillery
  • Rocket Artillery

Even if players do not plan on going for a domination victory, they are highly recommended to bring up their defenses and military to avoid being caught off guard by another leader declaring war. If a civilization's capital is taken over, another city in the civilization will become capital. However, if there are no more cities, the civilization will cease to exist and that player would lose.

Civilization 6 is available for iOS, Linux, Nintendo Switch, PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
