Not too long ago, Civilization 6 publisher 2K Games revealed a new slate of incoming content in the form of the Frontier Pass. Including 6 DLC total, the first titled Maya and Gran Columbia Pack is out now and also comes with the anticipated Civ 6 apocalypse game mode.

This DLC pack adds two new civilizations in the form of the Maya civilization led by Lady Six Sky and the Gran Colombian Civilization Simon Bolivar. While both of these add new abilities and units to the turn-based strategy game, it's the Civ 6 apocalypse game mode that takes the cake.

How to Get Civ 6's Apocalypse Game Mode

There are two main requirements to check out this new Civilization 6 content. First, players must own the aforementioned Maya and Gran Colombia Pack, which comes in the Frontier Pass as part of a $40 bundle, or can be purchased individually.

Secondly, fans must also own the Gathering Storm expansion to play, likely due to its relation to the weather. For those who have yet to try out the game themselves, it's worth mentioning that it's one of Epic Games Store's free games, lasting until May 28.

What's New in Civ 6's Apocalypse Game Mode

Weather becomes a huge, new threat in Civ 6's apocalypse game mode. Not only does it add forest fires and meteor showers as disasters to all game modes, but it itself is an "optional, specialized game mode" that has exclusive rules and two special disaster types: Comet Impact and Solar Flare. In it, larger versions of existing disasters exist, while the world will enter an apocalyptic state when climate change hits its peak.

Interestingly enough, there's also a new Civilization 6 military unit called the Soothsayer introduced with this game mode, which is a support unit that can trigger natural disasters at command. There's also a new score competition to sacrifice units to volcanoes, which requires Soothsayers to act on friendlies while near one. All in all and in addition to the eight total civilizations coming to Civ 6, it seems the frontier pass is off to a good start.

Civilization 6 is available for iOS, Nintendo Switch, PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
