Tabletop-inspired RPGCitizen Sleeper is a fascinating game to explore. The main storyline, about an emulated mind housed in a mechanical body known as a Sleeper, is packed with enough twists and turns to keep players guessing. Along the journey, however, players will unlock a whole range of quests, known as Drives. These give the player greater insight into the lives of the NPCs on The Eye and are one of the many things we love about Citizen Sleeper.

One of the first Drives players will unlock is "Get to Know Emphis." Emphis is a quiet, reflective food vendor. He'll open up to players, but only if they are willing to help him source rare ingredients. Although this Drive is unlocked early in the game, it's actually a pretty hefty task that will involve a lot of work. Players will need to source Girolle Caps, but finding these rare mushrooms isn't as straightforward as it seems.

Speak To Emphis

Emphis's Stall in Citizen Sleeper

If players haven't done so already, they'll need to speak to Emphis. His food stall is in the Bright Market, just below the Lowend. It's the first area players will unlock, and they'll do so by completing the "Gain 2 Local Knowledge" clock. Luckily, this is very straightforward to complete.

Once players have chatted with Emphis and sampled his delicious food, they'll unlock the "Get to Know Emphis" Drive, which unlocks this interesting and rewarding side quest.

Cross The Founder's Gap

Crossing the gap in Citizen Sleeper

Next, players will need to cross the Founders Gap. This is past the Lowend - players must unlock this first, which costs 60 cryo. Once players can access the Lowend, they can scroll up to find the Founders Gap, tucked away near the Free Spoke. Keep scrolling as far as the map will allow to find it. Crossing costs 150 cryo, which is a steep cost at the start of the game, but once players have invested that money, they'll be able to cross the Gap for free at any time.

Crossing the Gap will open up a new area, named The Greenway. This overgrown, complex area must be thoroughly explored to discover Girolle caps. Players must complete the clock "Going Green" by choosing the risky action "Map the Pathways" or the dangerous action "Walk the Greenway." Either one will complete the task, but "Walk the Greenway" is the riskier option: failing this will damage the Sleeper's condition, which means they'll need to repair themselves with Stabilizer more quickly. Once this clock is completed, they can access more locations in the Greenway.

Join The Hypha Commune

Becoming a Hypha Commune member in Citizen Sleeper

Joining the Hypha commune is a time-intensive task, but it's worth it; players will unlock the ability to be fed by completing tasks, as well as finding a new place to rest their heads at the end of a long cycle. Players will need to join the commune by completing a 12-part clock. They can do this by completing the safe activities "Work the Canteen" or "Work the Growbed."

Once players have done this, they will unlock a few new areas. First, they'll need to talk to Riko. Riko is a botanist, and she needs the players' help in understanding the plants that are thriving in the Greenway, despite being unattended for a long time. Helping her is a good idea for a few reasons. Her storyline is exciting, and the rewards are excellent. She'll also point the player toward a new location, where players can finally harvest those tricky Girolle caps.

Harvest Girolle Caps

The Mushroom Grove in Citizen Sleeper

The next place to visit are the Mushroom Groves. These buried fungus chambers are located in the center of the Greenway, and exploring here offers rich rewards. Players can help out Riko by collecting spores, or they can grab some mushrooms for Emphis by choosing the "Forage for Fungus" action. This is a dangerous activity and may require spending skill points on the Intuit skill, depending on how much players have developed this so far.

Foraging for fungus is, obviously, a risky endeavor. However, players will be rewarded with Girolle caps, at long last. It's a good idea to use either 5 or 6-dice rolls here. Once players have harvested 3 Girolle caps, they can return them to Emphis. (It's a good idea to make a note to return here: once players have completed Riko's mushroom-based quest, they can harvest mushrooms to make Stabilizer, which is an incredibly useful skill).

Return To Emphis

Finally, players can return to Emphis's Stall and donate the mushrooms to complete the "Girolle Fricasse" action. This will start a new clock, Girolle Prep, which Emphis will work on alone. Return after three cycles, and Emphis will present the player with a delicious, and very rewarding, meal.

Emphis will ask for more mushrooms after this. This is less arduous because players will have already opened up a large section of the map, including the Mushroom Grove. These can be sold for a decent price at the Paz Import/Export, which could be a good source of income for players once they've finished Emphis's quests. Completing this will finish Emphis's quest line, and is a story worth exploring. Like many classic RPGs, it's these side quests that flesh out the world, making it a fascinating place to spend time in.

Citizen Sleeper is currently available on PC, macOS, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and Switch.
