Cities: Skylines 2 is introducing modding support, its first-ever asset pack, and another DLC on March 25. The addition of mod tools is bound to ennoble the game's replayability, while also addressing some common complaints that the fandom has previously aimed at Cities: Skylines 2.

While Colossal Order's latest city builder was originally meant to have a simultaneous multi-platform release, the Finnish studio ended up delaying the console ports of Cities: Skylines 2 in September 2023, less than a month ahead of their planned debut. Meanwhile, the PC version of the game launched without modding support, which was one of the main selling points of its predecessor, with that state of affairs hence generating quite a bit of criticism from the fandom.

Cities: Skylines 2 Beta Modding Support Will Include Code and Map Editor

Colossal Order is now finally getting ready to address that shortcoming, having just confirmed it plans to roll out a beta version of the game's mod support on March 25. The first wave of the long-awaited modding tools will comprise a code and map editor. The importance of this release can hardly be overstated, as even Colossal Order itself recently said it regrets not offering day-one mod support in Cities: Skylines 2.

Cities: Skylines 2 Asset Mods Support Is Also in the Works

Aside from the upcoming pair of editors, the Finnish studio is also planning to introduce support for asset pack mods at a later date. In the meantime, fans and content creators interested in learning more about the game's modding process are encouraged to visit the official Cities: Skylines 2 Wiki.

The March 25 release of the game's mod tools will coincide with the debut of Beach Properties, the city builder's first asset pack, as well as the Deluxe Relax Station DLC. The former will introduce 70 new assets, the vast majority of which will come in the form of additional Cities: Skylines 2 residential buildings. Meanwhile, the audio pack promises to expand the city builder with 16 songs and 15 DJ voice tracks. Beach Properties and Deluxe Relax Station will retail at $9.99 and $4.99, respectively. Both are included in the game's $49.99 Expansion Pass: Waterfronts as well.

The upcoming arrival of modding tools also means that the Cities: Skylines 2 Paradox Mods platform will start accepting user submissions on March 25. Some popular content creators have already been testing the game's code and map editors since late 2023. Colossal Order previously confirmed that Paradox Mods will offer both free and paid content. While many fans were hoping that the game's modding support would be delivered via a third-party framework such as Steam Workshop, the developer said it opted for an in-house platform so that it's able to extend the city builder's selection of mods to the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S versions of Cities: Skylines 2.
