Upon reaching the end of Chrono Cross, players will square off against the Time Devourer for one final battle. This fight can be approached in two different ways, and the method that a fan employs will inform the ending that they receive. The method that gives players access to Chrono Cross's true ending centers around using the Chrono Cross element, which becomes available after obtaining the Chrono Cross key item, and this guide will detail exactly how that is done.
Chrono Cross Element Order
In order to receive the good ending in Chrono Cross, players must use an element of each color against the Time Devourer and then finish the assault by using the Chrono Cross element. Fans cannot simply use their elements at random, though, as a specific order must be followed. That order is yellow, red, green, blue, black, white, and then Chrono Cross, and the following section outlines a strategy that should help players consistently execute this requirement.
Chrono Cross: How to Use Chrono Cross
Setup
Before engaging with the Time Devourer on Opassa Beach, a player should set up their Chrono Cross party to efficiently use the Chrono Cross. More specifically, Serge should be accompanied by two characters with high stamina recovery, and they should have Level 1 elements that facilitate the aforementioned order equipped to their grids. For full clarity, here is what the party's element setup should look like:
- Character 1: Uplift (Level 1 Yellow), Bushwhacker (Level 1 Green), Gravity Blow (Level 1 Black)
- Character 2: Fireball (Level 1 Red), Aqua Beam (Level 1 Blue), Photon Ray (Level 1 White)
- Serge: Chrono Cross
Execution
Once the characters have been equipped with the appropriate elements in Chrono Cross, players should initiate the battle with the Time Devourer and follow these steps:
- Get Character 1 and 2 to Element Level 3 and Serge to Element Level 8.
- Defend with all characters and wait for the Time Devourer to use a strong element, such as Omega Green.
- Character 1 uses Uplift.
- Character 2 uses Fireball.
- Character 1 uses Bushwhacker.
- Character 2 uses Aqua Beam.
- Serge performs "1" attacks until Character 1 has Stamina 1.
- Character 1 uses Gravity Blow.
- Character 2 uses Photon Ray.
- Serge uses Chrono Cross.
To note, fans can also use the Chrono Cross to get all of the Chrono Cross characters that they recruited in their first playthrough back in New Game +. This is done by traveling to Sprigg's house in the Temporal Vortex, which is accessed through Hydra Marshes (Home World), once the key item has been obtained.
