With the release of Thor: Love and Thunder right around the corner, Thor star Chris Hemsworth and director Taika Waititi are giving fans a tease at what's to come and why Tom Hiddleston's Loki won't be part of the new adventure.

Loki has been a part of all Thor films up until now, making his absence in this new film surprising. While doing press for Thor: Love and Thunder, Hemsworth and Waititi joked when Hiddleston's Loki not being a part of the new film was brought up to them.

Loki was last seen with Thor in Avengers: Infinity War having his life taken by Thanos over the battle for the infinity stones, which is most likely why he won’t be present in Thor: Love and Thunder. However, Hemsworth joked that Hiddleston wouldn’t appear for a different reason. Hemsworth told Cinema Blend, “He didn't want to be involved. He said 'I hate all of you, and in particular me,' and I was like, that's a shame. And that's it. I mean, how many times can we kill him?”

In the midst of all the playful banter, Hemsworth does have a point. With Loki falling to his death in Thor, faking his demise in Thor: The Dark World, and his tragic death in Avengers: Infinity War, Loki has died and come back to life many times in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. That being said, bringing back Loki from the dead again wouldn’t have the same effect since it’s been done before in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Although fans will miss the character in the newest Thor film, it will definitely provide a tone shift. Audiences may get to see Thor still reeling from the loss of his brother, which might add some good emotional moments between Thor and the film's bad guy, Christian Bale's Gorr the God Butcher, who is reeling from the loss of his family as well.

Loki will definitely be missed in Thor: Love and Thunder, but it's fair to say his legacy will be celebrated in the upcoming film and the others that follow in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Thor: Love and Thunder arrives in theaters on July 8th, 2022.
