Fans have seen Chris Hemsworth play the mighty Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe for many years, but he is now jumping ship to another popular franchise. The actor has been confirmed to play the villain in the upcoming Mad Max: Furiosa, and it seems like Hemsworth had the time of his life filming the project. His journey from fan-favorite hero to the bad guy wasn’t the easiest, but it ended up being one of the “best experiences.”

The Mad Max: Furiosa plot remains a secret, but Warner Bros. has revealed that the film will focus on Anya Taylor-Joy's protagonist, who is taking over the reins from Charlize Theron, who has led the franchise so far. Taylor-Joy's character will be “caught in a clash between two rival warlords,” with Hemsworth playing one of them. After reading just a few pages of the script, Hemsworth claims to have fallen in love with it, and fans are waiting to see the film come to fruition.

When speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Hemsworth opened up about his villainous Furiosa role and talked about how the film will be exactly what fans “expect from the Mad Max world.” Director George Miller “has managed to do something unexpected,” revealed the actor, claiming to have been “blown away” by the script. However, when it was time to film, Hemsworth confessed to having doubts about playing a villain, unlike anything he had done before. “I wasn't sure what I was going to do. It was starting to get scary the closer I got to shooting. Then, all of a sudden, it clicked,” he revealed.

Mad Max Tom Hardy and Chris Hemsworth

Before Mad Max: Fury Road was released, Hemsworth had spoken of his interest in playing a character in the film, which was eventually offered to Tom Hardy. When Furiosa was announced, he couldn’t pass up the opportunity to work with Miller and immediately confirmed his involvement. Miller, now 78 years old, has directed every film in the Mad Max franchise since it began in 1979. Hemsworth is in awe of his work, referring to his skill as “the perfect combination of confidence and knowledge, but also a humility and a want to collaborate.”

The Mad Max franchise has had a string of successes, with the first film starring Mel Gibson as Max, an Australian policeman on a mission to stop a motorcycle gang. The film was a big hit, and for the longest time, it was referred to as the most profitable film ever made. Miller then created two sequels to the blockbuster film, 1981’s Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior and 1985’s Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome. After several delays, Mad Max: Fury Road was finally released in 2015, three decades after the previous film, and it also became a super hit. It remains to be seen whether Miller can continue his successful streak in the future.

Mad Max: Furiosa is scheduled for a theatrical release on May 24, 2024.
