Whilst on his press tour for Lightyear, Chris Evans has inevitably faced some questions about his past and potential future as Captain America with Marvel Studios. Now, he's addressed how he would feel about picking up the shield again now that it belongs to Anthony Mackie.

Ever since Chris Evans retired from the role of Captain America and passed it down to Mackie, fans have wondered if this was truly the last we've seen of The First Avenger. Now, Evans has confirmed his stance on returning as Captain America in this new multiverse chapter of the MCU.

During an interview on the Disney D23 Podcast, Evans said that returning to the role would be "upsetting." "I don't think [I would return]. I mean it was a really unbelievable ride and the character's just so dear to me and I'm just so precious with it," he shared. "To return to the role, I mean the truth is, the role isn't even mine anymore. The role is Anthony Mackie's. So, you know, even if there was a different incarnation, not as Captain America, but you know for Steve Rogers, even that would feel…I'd be very cautious, just because I love that chapter of my life professionally, personally. I love what those movies accomplished and to revisit it and potentially have some weird extension to that legacy would be upsetting if it didn't land. So it would require a near-perfect recipe, and it may just not be in the cards."

Captain America In Avengers: Age Of Ultron

Marvel fans have been hoping for Evans to reprise his role as Steve Rogers in some capacity, especially after rumors circulated that he would be returning as the beloved soldier in an upcoming Marvel Studios project. However, Evans has denied those rumors and nothing official has been announced. While Evans may not be returning as Cap, he did share that he misses working with Marvel and would look at doing another project in the future, though he'd prefer to reprise his Fantastic Four role over Captain America. "Johnny Storm, I feel like he didn't really get his day," Evans said to MTV News earlier this month. "That was before Marvel really found its footing. So I loved that role and, you know, who knows?"

The untitled Captain America 4 film will see the return of Mackie to the titular role, alongside co-writer Malcolm Spellman, who was the head writer for The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. The Disney Plus series was the first to showcase a new world following Steve Rogers' death, and it explored the anger and struggle of Sam Wilson's (formerly known as Falcon) decision to take up the shield as a Black man in America. Currently, plot details for the film are currently unknown, and no director is attached to the project. It is likely that fans may see more details about the film next month during Marvel Studios' panel at Comic-Con.

Even though Evans' legacy as Steve Rogers may be finished, fans can still look forward to more from Mackie's Captain America. Captain America 4 is still in development, and Evans' new film Lightyear is now playing in theaters.

The Captain America films are now available on Disney Plus.
