Yet another DC character is going to be coming to HBO Max in the not too distant future. It appears that an adaptation of the Aqualad origin story “You Brought Me the Ocean,” is going to be coming to the streaming service.

This upcoming Aqualad series will take a look at the DC Comics Aquaman sidekick character who has been updated quite a bit in the last few years. The series, which will have one-hour installments, will explore the life of Jackson “Jake” Hyde, a gay teenager from New Mexico.

Variety is reporting that HBO Max is bringing the Jake Hyde version of Aqualad to the streaming giant at some point in the near future, though the platform has not confirmed the report as of yet. It does appear that the project is in the very early stages, and there isn’t yet anyone attached to the series as part of the cast. As of now, it’s not yet known when DC fans can expect to see this version of Aqualad on the streaming service, but it does have at least one big name attached to it, even if it’s unlikely she’ll be appearing in front of the camera. Charlize Theron will executive produce the project alongside A.J. Dix, Beth Kono, and Andrew Haas of Denver & Delilah Films.

In “You Brought Me the Ocean,” Jake has been drawn to the water for most of his life and is desperate to leave his desert surroundings and head for the ocean. Eventually, Jake realizes that he has certain powers that he spends a good deal of the book exploring. He also ends up exploring his attraction to the high school swim captain Kenny Liu. Hyde is actually the second version of Aqualad to appear in DC Comics, and he made his first appearance on television in 2010 for the animated series Young Justice.

The comic book version of the character also appeared in “Brightest Day #4.” It turns out this version of the character is actually the son of Black Manta, Aquaman's arch-enemy. A different version of the Aqualad character has already appeared on HBO Max before. Garth had a role in several episodes of the television series Titans, though that version of Aqualad was eventually killed off.

As the project is still very new, it’s not yet known just when the newest DC series on HBO Max will start staffing up for the cast of this Aqualad series.

Aqualad is in development at HBO Max.
