Power from Chainsaw Man is beloved by the fandom for her eccentric and chaotic nature. Little did anyone know that she would become an intensely loyal and compassionate friend to Denji and Aki.

When Power was first introduced in Chainsaw Man, she was a reckless and selfish person who, while fun to watch, created numerous headaches for Denji and Aki. Sometime after Power moved in with Denji and Aki, her character changed noticeably as she started caring for both boys, especially her buddy Denji. By the time she died, Power was selfless and caring enough to risk certain death to save Denji from Makima's clutches.

Chainsaw Man: Aki’s Pain

Aki Hayakawa from Chainsaw Man is one of the most outstanding characters in the series. His story arc is the backbone of Chainsaw Man's first part.

Power's Development

Power's story involves steady growth in her character, illustrated by her actions at specific points in the series. The Power seen at the end of part one didn't happen miraculously overnight. She started out brash and selfish and, over time, developed into someone willing to sacrifice herself to save a friend.

The Beginning

Power is an exceedingly selfish pathological liar when the series first introduces her. This is due primarily to the fact she is the Blood Fiend, but that doesn't make her any less complicated for the people around her to deal with.

When the series investigates her origins, Power is simply out to murder any animal around her to consume their blood. She has atrocious hygiene and doesn't bat an eye when it comes to killing things because she simply doesn't care about anything or anyone but herself. This all changes when she meets Meowy.

When Power meets Meowy, the cat, she chooses to take care of it. She justifies her actions by telling herself that she is just plumping up the animal before she kills it since it does her no good to eat the cat while it's nothing but skin and bones. After caring for Meowy for a while, however, she comes to love the cat even though she has no idea why she does.

She is only caught and placed in Tokyo Special Division 4 after she runs to the city to get a human for the Bat Devil, who kidnaps Meowy. She is so desperate to save Meowy that she offers Denji up in exchange for Meowy to the Bat Devil. Her behavior changes very little, even after Denji kills the Bat Devil, saving Meowy. In fact, on Division 4's first mission, she offers up Denji as a sacrifice to the devil so that she can escape the building they're trapped in.

The Best Anime to Watch if You Like Chainsaw Man

Chainsaw Man is one of the biggest manga out there right now. Here are some anime to binge while you wait for its anime adaptation to come out.

Bonding with Denji and Aki

The first glimpses of change in Power's character are when she moves into Aki and Denji's apartment. She begins to consider her hygiene for the sake of her roommates and develops a slightly better rapport with both of them.

Power's first major change happens when she and Denji train with Kishibe. The bond they form in trying to defeat him is the first time she legitimately attempts to make friends with Denji, let alone anyone. This change in their relationship is marked by the comedic banter they have during their training with Kishibe.

After training, Power and Denji are significantly closer. Small moments showcase this, such as her offering a tomato off her burger to Denji and asking him if he wants to run away. From this moment forward, they look out for each other and are almost like siblings.

She still has moments of fear when she breaks her loyalty to Denji, but this can be again attributed to her being a fiend. Those moments of fear are more of a survival instinct than anything else, especially after she bonds with Denji and Aki. Over time, they become like a family in their little apartment. Their strengthened bond is shown when Denji and Aki help Power through her trauma associated with the Darkness Devil. Also, her particularly strong relationship with Denji can be best seen when she is willing to risk her life to follow Denji simply because they're buddies.

Aki's Death and Saving Denji

After Aki's death, Denji and Power move into a new apartment together. Although the pair are grieving, the manga doesn't focus on that. Instead, it delivers a detached summary of their actions from Denji's perspective. Then Makima takes Denji, and Power isn't seen until she looks for Denji to give him a cake for his birthday. The fact that she cared enough for Denji to celebrate his birthday in and of itself is a significant marker of how much she has grown to this point in the series.

When Power is about to give Chainsaw Man to Makima a few chapters later, she decides at the last minute to distract Makima and run away with Denji, thanks to Pochita appealing to her to save him. She ultimately dies to save Denji, but her sacrifice is worthwhile.

Denji defeated Makima and saved the world thanks to her actions, which kept him alive. Power overcame her selfish instincts because she cared about Denji. Her caring about anyone, let alone Denji, is a complete 180 from how she was first introduced in the series. Her evolution from a pathological liar out to save her own skin to a loyal friend willing to sacrifice herself is what makes her development arguably the most impactful in the entire series.

Chainsaw Man is available to stream on Crunchyroll.
