The creative director of CD Projekt Red's upcoming Cyberpunk 2077 sequel has seemingly dropped a tease for the series. Fans have been eagerly waiting for any official news regarding the studio's next game.

In a Q1 2024 earnings report, the CD Projekt Group revealed that it had zero developers working on Cyberpunk 2077 as of April 30. CD Projekt Red, the company's development arm, has shifted its focus to the popular RPG's sequel codenamed Project Orion, Cyberpunk 2077 Game Director Gabe Amatangelo said in an interview that was published in March. Not much is known about the upcoming title aside from the fact that it is in the early stages of development, but CD Projekt Red seemingly does not want people to forget that it still has more Cyberpunk content in store for fans.

It's the End of an Era for Cyberpunk 2077

New information from developer CD Projekt Red confirms the end of an era for its open world action-RPG Cyberpunk 2077.

"Cyberpunk's not dead," Project Orion Creative Director Igor Sarzynski said in a recent Twitter post. In addition to Cyberpunk 2077, Sarzynski previously worked on 2015's The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, which has become one of the best-selling video games of all time. He is now part of CD Projekt Red's Boston studio, working alongside Amatangelo and other industry veterans like former Blizzard Entertainment Lead Product Manager Dan Hernberg and ex-IO Interactive Gameplay Director Ryan Barnard.

There were plenty of positive reactions to Sarzynski's tweet, with one Twitter user commenting that the Cyberpunk nation was still alive. Another user, meanwhile, asked for any concept art of CD Project Red's next project to be revealed. In January, Sarzynski fueled the hype train for Project Orion after he boldly claimed that Cyberpunk 2077 was just a warm-up.

Cyberpunk 2077's Road to Redemption

Despite going through a rocky launch in late 2020 that involved all sorts of technical issues, Cyberpunk 2077 was recognized for its mature narrative, immersive setting, and impressive visuals. The game has become much more stable thanks to numerous updates, and it has even sold more than 25 million copies. Meanwhile, Cyberpunk 2077's Phantom Liberty DLC is now considered to be one of the best single-player RPG expansions ever released. The base game has received several video game award nominations as well, and it managed to bag a win at the most recent British Academy Games Awards.

Fans can only hope that CD Projekt Red's expensive rehabilitation of Cyberpunk 2077 has provided the developer with fresh ideas and important insights that will lead to an improved sequel. Project Orion could tweak some of its predecessor's contested elements like the crafting system, or it could introduce features that were cut from Cyberpunk 2077 such as wall running.
