The Castlevania games revolve around vampire hunters and deadly night creatures waging war against one another. This means that casualties are inevitable: even in the ranks of the vampire hunters, their loved ones and companions are not safe from getting killed throughout the campaign. This grim reality is even more dire for the innocent villagers who are caught between the forces of good and evil.

Dracula, while malevolent, has sired a child in the form of Alucard. What makes Alucard special is that he is born from the union between a vampire and a human: Dracula and Lisa. In Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, Lisa is mentioned multiple times as players progress through the game, though she doesn’t appear physically.

It is said that Dracula came to love Lisa due to her having a close resemblance to his previous love, Elisabetha Cronqvist. Lisa was skilled in concocting medicines to help people who were affected by the epidemic. But her altruistism was seen by the Church as witchcraft: this led to them arresting Lisa, and eventually burning her at the stake.

Both Alucard and Dracula were too late to save Lisa, with the latter vowing revenge against humanity at all costs. However, Lisa welcomed her sacrifice, as she saw that this was a way to save humanity from damnation.

1 Sara Trantoul – Castlevania: Lament of Innocence

Sara Trantoul pleading with Leon to end her life for the greater good

The creation of the Vampire Killer whip is one that revolves around heartbreak. This was expanded in Castlevania: Lament of Innocence where Sara Trantoul, Leon Belmont’s fiance, shares the unfortunate news that she is slowly turning into a vampire thanks to Walter Bernhard and that Leon must end her suffering.

Leon, unsurprisingly, tries to console Sara, stating that he will find a cure for her and turn her back into a human. But Sara responds by saying that she can already feel herself transforming into a vampire and that she doesn’t want her death to be in vain. Even in her final hours, Sara still wants to aid Leon in his quest: she makes a soul and blood pact with her beloved which leads to her life and soul infusing with the Whip of Alchemy.

This led to the forging of the Belmont Clan’s most powerful and iconic weapon, the Vampire Killer whip.
