Castlevania: 5 Things The Entire Anime Series Did Right (& 5 Things It Did Wrong)

The Castlevania anime series pleased a lot of fans of the game franchise, but there are a few aspects where it did more wrong than right.

Richter uses that trauma to fuel his hate for the vampires and fights alongside his friend, Maria, in France to rid the world of evil one vampire at a time. Fans should know that Castlevania: Nocturne is not a one-season wonder. It is instead the beginning of what could become another multi-part series like the original Netflix adaptation. Here are a few of the burning unanswered questions from season one.

WARNING! Spoilers ahead.

8 The Fate Of Tera

Maria and Tera in Castlevania Nocturne

To test The Abbot’s resolve in aiding the vampires, Erzsebet asks him to sacrifice his daughter Maria. Thinking this will be for the greater good he is prepared to do it even though it is later revealed she didn’t mean sacrifice as in kill.

Erzsebet wanted to turn Maria into a vampire, but Tera steps in to take her place. Tera is confirmed to transform in episode eight but there is a big question here. Will Tera follow orders or will she try to escape and help her daughter and the others fight off the vampiric scourge?

7 What Was Alucard Up To?

Alucard in Castlevania Nocturne

Alucard is in two games in the mainline franchise. He first appeared as a playable character in Castlevania 3: Dracula’s Curse and then got his solo adventure in Castlevania: Symphony of the Night.

The span between the timeline of those two games is about three hundred years and that’s the same timeframe for Castlevania: Nocturne. So, what was Alucard doing all this time in the anime? Was he fighting evil in Europe or was he simply sleeping, waiting to fight alongside the Belmont clan again?

6 Why Did Edouard Retain His Humanity?

Edouard’s demon form in Castlevania Nocturne

Edouard suffers one of the worst fates in the anime. He was transformed into a demon after being feasted upon by a dozen or more vampires. To awaken as a monster with amnesia has to be one of the greatest shocks someone can go through.

Metroidvanias are getting increasingly popular among the indie crowd of creators — but which is better? Metroid or Castlevania?

Why did he retain his humanity when every other creature seemingly did not? The only other named character to break free of their demon brain was Jacques, but that was only after Edouard started singing. What is it about Edouard that makes him special beyond resolve?

5 Mizrak’s Turn

Mizrak in Castlevania Nocturne

Mizrak is the loyal captain and guard of both The Abbot and The Abbey in town. His faith in the church, God, and The Abbot is unwavering even after learning about how he and Tera had a child via Maria. Mizrak was able to look the other way on that issue, but not when The Abbot decided to sacrifice Maria to Erzsebet to prove that he was loyal to the vampires.

What was it about this sacrifice that Mizrak disapproved of? Was it bending the knee ultimately to Erzsebet or was it Maria being handed over like a piece of meat to vampires?

4 Will Juste Return?

Juste in Castlevania Nocturne

Juste is the main character of Castlevania: Harmony of Dissonance which was the second Metroidvania entry to appear on the Game Boy Advance. It is closely tied to both Castlevania: Rondo of Blood and Castlevania: Symphony of the Night as it happened about fifty years before Richter’s story began.

Like many Castlevania games, there are multiple endings for Juste with the best seeing Juste defeat Dracula and walk away from his castle with both Maxim and Lydie, his allies. Castlevania: Nocturne seemingly chose the darkest ending as Maxim and Lydie died thus resigning Juste to life of non-vampire killing. Will this broken old man return to fight alongside his grandson, Richter, in season two of the anime?

3 Who Is That Figure Annette Summons?

Annette in Castlevania Nocturne

In Annette’s backstory, she explains that her teacher, Cecile, taught her how to both summon and communicate with the dead. The first figure that appears in her summoning circle is a mysterious man with a big hat with candies on top.

2 What Is Olrox’s Goal?

Olrox in Castlevania Nocturne

Olrox is one of the most mysterious characters in the first season and that includes the aforementioned spirit of Annette’s. The anime opens with Olrox killing Richter’s mother, Julia, when he was a child. He spared him as a boy and even helped Richter and his friends later by giving him The Abbot’s incantation book.

He also attacked some enemy vampires in the finale. So, what does Olrox want? Does he want to rule over the world instead of Erzsebet, or is there something more to his goals?

1 Will Dracula Return Or Is This The Erzsebet Show?

Erzsebet in Castlevania Nocturne

The general theme of the Castlevania series is about the Belmont clan fighting a seemingly never-ending battle against Dracula who keeps coming back. In the anime, he is defeated twice, and it seems like that last time was it. However, there are ways the bring him back as there always are.

So, is his resurrection where Castlevania: Nocturne is going to eventually go to, or is this entire series going to revolve around Erzsebet? It would be bold if this series held back on Dracula but that may upset some fans in the end.
