Since its announcement back in 2018, players have been dying to know when they will be able to get their hands on Carrion, a reverse-horror game by Phobia Game Studios and Devolver Digital. Now it seems like their patience is paying off with Devolver Digital revealing the release date today during its Devolver Direct broadcast.

For the uninitiated, Carrion is a horror game where players will take on the role of the monster rather than the typical human survivor. The monster itself is an amorphous amalgamation of tentacles, eyeballs, and gnashing teeth. Since the game was first revealed, it gained a bit of a cult following and is widely being considered one of the most anticipated horror games of 2020.

However today Devolver Digital revealed that players won't have to "anticipate" much longer. Alongside a new trailer during its Devolver Direct broadcast, the publisher announced that Carrion will be available to play on July 23 for PC, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox One.

Perhaps even more exciting than the confirmation of the game's release date was when Phil Spencer, the head of Xbox, came on the stream to announce that Carrion would be available day one on Xbox Game Pass. Considering Xbox and Devolver's previous partnerships when it comes to Game Pass, this is hardly surprising news but welcomed nonetheless.

Carrion wasn't the only game that got a confirmed release date during the show. Fall Guys, a massively multiplayer party game for PC and PS4, had its release date announced for August 4 as well. A new pixel-art style indie game titled Olija was also announced with a surprise launch for today.

While many are excited about Carrion, it's worth noting that the idea of playing as the monster isn't exactly new territory for horror games. Games like Dead by Daylight have been popular for a while now, however, it seems like what Carrion will excel at will be giving players that power fantasy in a single-player setting. Throw in the fact that it looks super stylish with its SNES style graphics, and it makes sense players gravitated towards it. Hopefully, when the game releases in less than two weeks, it will live up to those expectations.
