In order to create an atmosphere of fear and tension, many horror games put players in the role of a vulnerable person who struggles to defend themselves against whatever creatures are threatening their lives. However, the upcoming PC horror game Carrion flips this idea on its head, instead letting players control the monster that is killing everyone.

In Carrion, players take control of an "amorphous alien being." As this red, blob-like monster, players will stalk and brutally murder their victims in gruesome ways. Players will have a number of unique abilities at their disposal to accomplish this, though further details on that front are unavailable at this time.

While players wait for some more concrete details on Carrion, they can check out the announcement trailer right here:

The trailer for Carrion is very graphic, and shows that it is gorier than many other games in the genre. Even with its 2D pixel art style, squeamish people may find it difficult to watch the trailer to the end. Some will find the high level of violence and gore to be a positive aspect of the game, but others may be turned off by the sheer volume of it.

Regardless of how one feels about the level of violence in Carrion, though, the game's unique premise is making headlines. It seems as though horror gaming fans are intrigued at the prospect of becoming the monster, as opposed to playing as the relatively helpless victims like they do in a lot of horror games. But considering the commercial success of games like Friday the 13th: The Game, where players are able to play as horror movie icon Jason Voorhees, and Dead by Daylight, the interest in Carrion shouldn't be all that surprising.

Whether or not Carrion is able to deliver a quality gaming experience to go along with its interesting premise remains to be seen. However, the game has been turning heads since its announcement trailer, and it definitely seems like one of the most promising upcoming horror games in development.

Carrion is in development for PC.
