With Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie), formerly the Falcon, having stepped into the shoes and taken up the shield left for him by former Captain America, Steve Rogers, at the end of Avengers: Endgame, it makes sense that the new Captain America would be facing a new challenge and a new world post-blip. Captain America: New World Order fit for a title encompassing all of those changes.
In a recent interview, director Julius Onah and one of the stars of the upcoming sequel in the Captain America series, Danny Ramirez, who plays the new Falcon (having first appeared in the Disney Plus series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier) spoke about what kind of Captain America Sam Wilson will turn out to be.
Considering that the Marvel Cinematic Universe has had a couple of earth-shattering shakeups such as the blip, which led to new sorts of terrorist groups, some even pro-blip, and Captain America finding out how far Hydra's tendrils reached in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, it only makes sense—the world is still trying to figure out what it is after these massive concussions. "The decisions he's going to have to make, and the situations he's going to be confronted with are radically different from what Steve Rogers had to deal with," Onah said to IGN. "And as a result of that, because he's a leader, now, of this team, he's got to make decisions that are going to have massive implications."
The director went on, explaining that Sam isn't Steve and that because of that fact the two are going to have very different experiences. Ramirez, who will return as Joaquin Torres in Captain America 4, the new incarnation of the Falcon after Sam Wilson takes over Cap's duties for real, also talked about the upcoming reinvention of one of Marvel's best-loved heroes of all time. “I think Sam Wilson's his own person. Specifically with the challenges that he faces in Falcon and Winter Soldier. A lot of the themes that we wrestle with, specifically, is the world ready for Sam Wilson as Captain America, and what that entails, and just seeing the wrestling of that in the series."
A lot has happened since Sam first met Steve, and the world of the Marvel Cinematic Universe has changed in irrevocable ways, ways that even somebody like Steve wouldn't be ready for, as audiences saw when he chose to live a life in the past rather than continue to face the onslaught of the future. He then passed the shield onto Sam Wilson. This was something that The Falcon and the Winter Soldier explored, if the world was ready for a Black Captain America—a role in which Wilson wouldn’t be the first, it was revealed, but the second after Isaiah Bradley (Carl Lumbly).
Captain America: New World Order is scheduled to be released in theaters on May 3rd, 2024.
