The Callisto Protocol is easily one of the most anticipated games of the fall, as the horror game has managed to dominate the many shows it has appeared at, stay relevant in day-to-day conversations, and use the Dead space pedigree of Glen Schofield without simply feeling like another take on the same thing. The Callisto Protocol is shaping up to be a great horror game, and death has become its calling card.

The Callisto Protocol is clearly not afraid to brutalize its protagonist in gory, gutwrenching, and terrifying ways. And this is something that developer Mark James recently discussed in an interview with IGN Japan, stating that "[gory deaths have] become our signature now. We have a signature death at the end of every trailer." It also seems the studio wants to reward players who die, as James also implies that they are going to do that a lot.

James also stated that The Callisto Protocol's deaths shouldn't be seen as a punishment, but as a way for someone to learn from their mistakes and be entertained in the process. Because of this philosophy, James revealed that The Callisto Protocol's studio is currently working on the game's achievements and trophies, and the studio has put "an achievement in there for seeing all of the deaths." This would seemingly imply to be deaths from the game's enemies, the game's hazardous environments, and any other way the studio sees fit to kill its players.

Of course, James wouldn't speak to how many unique ways there are to die in the game, but he did add that "you'll have to work hard to do it." In other words, it sounds like a time sink given The Callisto Protocol's signature approach to death. That presents fans of the game and, of course, achievement hunters with a new challenge throughout the game. It may be something that unlocks naturally throughout the game if someone dies enough, but given that a goal in a game is usually to not die, it stands to reason that most players will miss some of these death animations.

Ultimately, it remains to be seen how this achievement really emphasizes The Callisto Protocol's signature touch here, but it is clear that fans are in for a gory game regardless. Comparisons to Dead Space are already being made about it, such is the nature of games like these two, but it's clear that it's leaving its own mark as well, at least from the marketing so far.

The Callisto Protocol launches December 2 for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
